Hi, We just bought a 1985 First 305 Beneteau and two months later the headliner in the quarterberth fell into the bunk below. Does anyone have an idea about how we should go about re-adhereing it. We went to our local boat store and they said we need to sand off all the green foam and then apply wood strips with dry cement to the fiberglass and then reapply the liner and then drill wood to that and pray that it works. I am not optimistic about this. Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Eileen Eilyns@aol.com

headliner woes!!!

Eileen Been there...done that...got the shirt!!!!!! All seriousness aside..(-: On a First 29 a few years ago I pulled all the vinyl out, solvent washed the vinyl and the inside of the boat, bought new foam, got a compatable glue, glued the foam to the old vinyl and glued it all back into the boat. Job was about 7.5 on a scale of 10 and stayed in place pretty well. You can take a morgage and have it professionally done, if you can find someone to do it for you. It's THAT kind of job. In some less complicated locations you can clean it all off, epoxy in stringers and attach teak strips, or some other wood, to the stringers. Affordable if you can do it yourself but pretty expensive if you have to have done. Check the archives. It seems that last year there was a good bit of traffic about this situation. Good luck Cliff

No problem!

Go to www.sailrite.com and look for the "foam backed headliner" material. Comes in 54" widths for $12-17 per yard. The vinyl finish variety has a pebbly texture and is very close to the original. Sailrite will send you small samples free if you want to see it to choose color/style. Use your old headliner as a pattern and cut the new pieces. You will probably have to have the seams sewn by an upholstery or canvas shop, but its not that big of a deal. Clean the inside of the hull using a wire brush and maybe some Goof-Off and make sure you get all the loose stuff off, then use 3M trim adhesive (spray can) and you'll be all set. Make sure to ventilate the cabin well when you do all this as the trim glue is very fumy. I started the project on my 1983 First 32 and it worked great. Ended up selling the boat prior to finishing the job, but what I did get done looked great and stuck very firmly. Good luck! Tim

studying for 2 years...

I have 1990 First 285, with headliner woes. Got estimate from Upholstery shop: $2000 (if I do the prep). Plan to do it myself. Foam backed vinyl from garysupholstery. Plan to use 3M High Strength 90 adhesive -- has higher release temperature than 3M trim, and less overspray. you are not alone... search the forum archive and good luck.

re: headliner

Hi Ivan, Have you contacted the Beneteau factory? I noticed you are in their neighborhood and was wondering if it is worth a phone call from California. Thanks, Eileen

Maybe from Beneteau

Eileen, I did find one posting on the web... It that said that Beneteau would sell them a replacement set of headliner pieces for $1000. Haven't followed up on that. I have gotten help from Beneteau on other parts for the boat, with success. So, I think it would be reasonable to give them a call. Keep in mind that if one part of the headliner fell, it will all fall. So be prepared to replace it all. Good luck Ivan
