Today I removed the mixing elbow off my hunter 30 1991. I did so at the suggestion of several dock mates. I am trying to fix the black smoke at exhaust. also a black "oil slick" at high RPM. I found it not to be as clogged as I thought. It does need a cleaning. Anyone used a solvent to soak it in to clean it out? Thanks! Ed

Exhaust Elbow

The carbon build up may be able to be removed by scraping or with power drill and heavy duty wire brush, but I tried soaking one in carburator cleaner for days and it did nothing. I would be reluctant to use acid. You could always buy new parts; install them yourself and just save on the labor.

Replace it!

Ed: I would suggest that you replace the elbow. Then you can work on trying to remove the crud. If it is still okay when you get all of the carbon removed, you can use it as a spare for your next change out. Quite often the acids will corrode the interior shell and it may be junk. If you cannot get the stuff out, you may want to take it to a automotive garage and have them soak it in one of their vats. A radiator shop may also be able to help remove the build up too.

Replace it

That's the consensus opinion in the Archives as well.

its not just carbon

Unfortunately it is not just carbon build up it is also seawater deposits from the exhaust cooling. It is extremely hard and hence difficult to remove. Just break down and buy a new one before you end up like I did and cant even run the engine above 1200 RPM and have to motor several miles home at 1 or 2 knots smoking like crazy. Jim

Clean out Only

I use a sharp pointy tool and just pick away at the crude best you can and try loosening as much as possible, its really hard stuff and some of it won't come off so replacement is down the road. I asked a few radiator shops and they said forget it. This is my third year that I have cleaned it out and so far it runs great,it is a 2001 yanmar. nick
