Hi, Im a new Catalina 25 owner, I purchased a real nice cat 25 at the very end of last summer, she dosent need much work at all, but Ive been steadily doing lots of little things that I want to do like finishing the woodwork etc,, but I have a few questions,, I cant figure out what to do with these mast lights, most of them were burnt out but I repaired those, but does anyone out there know where I can get a decent price combination lamp for the very top, sorry I dont know the proper terminology yet but Im working on that, it looks like a soda can size with green/red and of course white, I cant believe some of the prices of that lamp, also I dont understand the labeling in my switch center , theres steaming, mast head, anchor, running , navigation , etc etc etc, I know navigation lamps, anchor, and that kind of thing, where is the steaming,, where is the mast head, does anyone have a link, thanks, also if there are any experienced sailers out there in the Piermont NY area , would love to get together this spring for a shakedown cruise so I can get my self familiar with sailing, I plan on taking a course , I do have about 5 years of power boating so Im not a complete idiot, but would like to do it right, thanks

Welcome!

The light you are looking for is called a Tri Light West amrine has them but gogle LED Tri-light there are a couple of them that asre combo tri and anchor lights. They run between 300 and 500 dollars but acording to the adds they will last 5000 to 10000 hours. Unless you plan on doing a lot of night sailing, or you don't have a lot of battery reserve, the etry-light might be an un-necessary expense. The steaming light is the light in the front of your mast about half way down. At night when you are running under power, you must have that steaming light on. The mast head light on a smaller power boat acts as both the steaming light and the stern light. On a sail boat the mashead and the anchor light are one in the same. Oh BTW if you are under power you can not run a tri light at the top of the mast. you must run the standard nav lights and the steaming light. The tri-light is for under sail only. There are many sailors around who are more than happy to give a novice a hand, you'll probably find a few up there, good luck Patrick

I have a 1985 C25 - See my Avitar

I replaced the steaming light (mid mast) and the anchor light (mast top), but used the original type of lighting. You can find a lot on the Catalina Direct website. I would look there first to see if you want to use it.

sorry qm1(SW)

... you are a great guy... but your solicitations are becoming annoying to me. I realize you are connected in some way with this website, but I'm not keen on the liberties you are taking because of it. Your participation in these forums to promote your store may exempt you from the following disclaimer that appears in the forum header. But hey, maybe I'm wrong... wouldn't be the first time... just my own opinion. IMPORTANT! Don't bite the hand that feeds you. SailboatOwners.com spend a lot of time and money in providing and moderating the Catalina Owners Site, Trailer Sailor's Site, Benetau Owner site etc etc. They administer the sites in an intelligent way. I think it is quite proper for them to helpfully point out that they sell equipment that meets a need expressed in a previous post. This does not break any rules that I am aware of AND if they don't make a reasonable profit this site will disappear. The CatalinaOwners disclaimer that you included at the end of your post just says that people on the site are going to express their opinions and give advice that is in no way the responsibility of SailboatOwners or any of the other groups. That means that they are not responsible for what a poster choses to say. The code of conduct is seperately posted. I very much appreciate what SailboatOwners.com provides to me and if they want to offer advice or suggestions, I have no problem with that at all. By the way - I note that you are a poster who tries to help others out so I am not questioning your general motivations. Perhaps you didn't realize who pays the bills for the great service we all receive through SailboatOwners.com.

Malcom.....

I completely understand how this site and its forums are supported. There are banner ads and e-mails reminding me of this at all times. I have been following this group of forums for quite some time and will kindly remind you and others that the non-commercialization of the open discussion groups is a fundamental premise. Except for the "expert" forums these groups have always remained non-commericial in nature and have maintained their active participation quite well. As far as biting the hand that feeds me.... well that can go both ways. The reason this forum is popular is because they aren't commercially moderated, at least not blatantly. So... if you are implying that the survival of the forum is dependent on commercial ads being posted in the members' discussion areas.. then so be it. It will fail anyway. What I am interested in is maintaining the integrity of the group. When one "participates" it should be with a spirit of community and brotherhood, not an attempt to hawk your wares. If the future of this forum is tied to the success of an online store then we are truly in trouble. Rember SAILNET? If Dave wants to start an expert forum and peddle his goods there I would find that acceptable. Maybe "ask the SBO customer service expert" or something like that. Regarding the disclaimer... read it carefully and note that it applies to all paricipants. Dave becomes a participant when he posts in the open forum. It would be inappropriate for saiboatowners.com to absolve itself of any responsibilty for actions of its "customer service" representative. Perhaps the disclaimer should be rewritten to exclude the SBO's customer service rep.

Joe - thanks for the thougtful reply but

I understand your reply however I don't agree with the gist of it in this or similar circumstances. We can agreee to disagree. The circumstances were that the original poster had some questions about where to purchase navigational lights. One of the earlier replies suggested Catalina Direct - then a representative of the good people who run this site indicates some of the things they offer. I have no problem with that - it is an additional piece of information - and when I am buying something for the boat I become an information junkie so I appreciate being presented with alternatives in a helpful way. If I was the original question poster, I would take the information offered and take a look at what is offered via this site - I would compare it to other alternatives available and make my decision with a slight bias towards purchasing my needs from someone on this site.

I am fine with it

Sorry the thread got hijacked quilombo and do check out the C25/250 association. I am fine with the providers of the forum adding replies noting that they sell the stuff a person is looking for. These are not general solicitations but specific to the request at hand. It is a great site and I appreciate it.

To complete the hijack...

As long as we're on the topic of commerce I'd appreciate some feedback. We are very sensitive to mucking up the forums with commercial messages. That said, there are still a shocking number of users who don't realize we sell anything here... meanwhile, we still need to pay the rent, lights, and buy more memory once in a while. :) We try to limit self-references to threads where someone has requested a source for a product. Our goal is to heighten awareness in the least intrusive way possible. Here's my question: is what we do ultimately _more_ intrusive than the method they use in the Sailnet forums, where keywords automatically link to products. Example: If you use the word GPS in your post, it appears as a link (blue, underlined text) that points to the GPS section of their store. Is that more or less intrusive than what we do? Thanks for your help on this. Phil

Phil, I like the way you do it here.

Keep up the good work. By the way, where can I buy one of those cool boats like the one in your avatar? Bob V

Phil, it's just fine as it is

There's just no reason not to make folks aware of the products that are offered, and we shouldn't get too moved by one respondent's well meaning but perhaps misplaced contribution to the discussion. The concept is and always has been to keep "outsiders" from "advertising" on the posts. I don't think that that should apply to the folks who run the joint with references to their supplies. Just another "inmate." :):):) Heck, we can't get folks to use the archives "button" how dey gonna find da sooplies, too? OOOOH, dat's what chandlery means????:)

Friendly Hijack

Sorry Joe, I'll side with Phil and QM1. I feel bad when I send someone to another website when it available here at "home port", but it happens. So far it looks like HOW & Co. only sells things when they offer competitive pricing. And so far they know best if it fits or (k)not. And the direct link they provide is nice. Phil, you've worked hard and you deserve it! Keep you the diligent work. So quilombo, be brave and put them to the test. Now that antennas are up, order the part and tell us whether QM1 should continue interjecting.

Joe,

the first two threads contained information directing the orignal poster to other retail establishments. The 3rd thread had a direct link to another discussion forum, the same as this one. They are allowed to stand. Many other forums I visit will zap any links to other sites. The 4th response was only giving him another option, it was not telling him he had to buy it here or else. They offer competitive pricing, if not, just buy it elsewhere. "I'm always happy to track something down and give you a quote." sounds friendly enough and offering to help. I know I certainly appreciate the help I get when researching something.
