Help me identify this tall ship

This picture was taken by my dad in early 1976 while on Vacation in Spain.

From the figurehead, I assume it is the Coast Guard ship, the Eagle, but I don't see the red stripe on the side.

Any thoughts?

You can just make out the name.

it is the Eagle.

More likely than not it is not the Eagle. Eagle is one of 'the Five Sisters'. All identical ships built in Germany, TOVARISCH (Russia), SAGRES 11 (Portugal), MIRCEA (Romania), and GORCH FOLK 11 (Germany).

'My bad' I posted this before I saw your second pic. But at least we know now there are others exactly the same. The fact that the CG stripe was missing made me check further.

Apparently that picture was taken just before the stripe was added.

One of the major controversies regarding the cutter was generated when the Coast Guard decided to add the "racing stripe" to her otherwise unadorned hull in mid-1976. She was the last cutter so painted and many in the sailing community decried the new paint job.

The picture was from early in 1976. It was processed in July of 1976,

The Eagle had the racing stipe in the bicentennial celebration in New York Harbor.

Even as a kid (and Coast Guard brat) I was appalled when they painted the stripe on the Eagle. Missed 2 chances to go aboard when I was a kid too. Was at summer camp in NH the first time and didn't get to go to Eastport ME with my grandparents the second because they weren't sure if they were coming back to our house or driving straight to Boston; they came back & I was annoyed.
