As I see it, the only advantage to placing them higher is it gives you a better angle to get them farther aft on the boom...........however.........I made some extremely simple lazy jacks by tossing a line over the spreaders and around the mast. This line has a brass ring on both ends. Thru the rings I run another line (shock cord actually) which goes under the boom about where your pic shows yours going. By using shock cord for the line that goes under the sail it allows the boom to move with the jacks up. Of course while sailing I do release the jacks since they are connected with snap hooks.
Check out the Boom Kicker rigid vangKeep in mind what you will have to do with your sail cover if you attach the lazy jacks permanently from boom to mast. I made mine utilizing a block on each side of the mast so that they can be brought back to the “rams horns” (on the H26). Folding them back eliminates any chance of chafing the sail also.
Mine work fine starting just below the spreader. I wonder if the sail having a full battenmakes this easier? Moving the starting point up is going to significantly increase the amount of sail that comes in contact with the jacks especially when the sail is full.
Come on guys, Put the jacks any where on the mast you like,( I as well put them on the spreader ) and adjust them sothay catch the sail when it comes down. Then use your toping lift to hold the boom up when the sail is down. and leave them alone to do there job. I never adjust, or move them FWD.when sailing, if adjusted right, youl never half to move them agine. And Yes I even leave them on when I race.Dave B.Nebr.
