I have a fairly large leak on my 81 Hunter 30 when I am underway (both under sail and power). The bilge fills after a short time. I can see the water streaming from somewhere above my stuffing box. Is it likely that it is the rudder post or are there other likely sources? I am told there is a stuffing box on the rudder also. If so, how difficult is it to repack the gland?

Had a Similiar Leak

I chased a similiar leak all last summer. When the boat was at rest it did not leak. When moving it leaked profusely. After chasing it ALL summer I finally found the source. It was a leak in the fiberglass at the exhaust hose thru hull. The molded fiberglass flange had a small crack in it. Look for any sign of mildew that may signify the water has been following a path for a long time. Another trick is to dry everything and then spread some talcom powder to see where it first gets moist. Basically there were four areas aft. The two cockpit drains, the rudder post, and the exhaust thru hull. Could be any of them.

Check the muffler

I had a similar problem on my Hunter 30. Water was coming in, when the engine was running, turned out to be a hole in the muffler. I ended up removing and patching it.
