Help Identifying my Furler

I have a C&C 24 with headsail furling. Unfortunately the line constantly comes off the barrel and fouls around the forestay.

I believe the line guard is missing off the front, or they have been replaced with the wrong one.

looks like a Harken furler, but I can't find anything to identify it. I want to solve the problem but need to figure out what I have first.

All wisdom accepted happily! I attached some pics to help.

It doesn’t really look like my old CDI (but I have a larger boat). But the wire halyard (if that is what I see) looks like a CDI design. Do you have an internal halyard or do you use one on the mast?

Just wondering.....I think the block on the forward stancion (probably the bow pulpit) seems too close to the furler. There is supposed to be an angled pull on the line to help the line furl correctly. Removing the first block should not hurt the performance and might improve it. Also, tension on the furling line when hauling out the sail with the jib sheet will help the line furl on the drum correctly. Both changes are without cost, so certainly worth a try.

It also looks to me like your furling line is wound the wrong way around the drum. It seems like it should be coming off on the foreground side of the photo, and not led through that slotted fitting.
The two slotted fittings are not fairleads, but more likely attachment points for a shield around the drum.

Good catch. I agree. I'm not sure if that will solve the original problem, but it should make the furler work better.

I am not sure of the manufacturer. It has the characteristics of a harken. The open Delrin bearings.

One problem may be that the furling line is to large. This could put too much line on the drum when unfurling the sail. Thus causing the line to ride up and over the upper guard.

I concur that the line appears to be lead to the wrong side of the drum. This might roll the sail up so the suncover is on the correct side when furled but it fouls the line and creates friction on tte line as it leads through the lead onto the drum. On solution is the run the furling line down the port side of the boat.

I would send your query to Harken Support and ask them if this is one of their early models.

Great input. Thanks to all. I am going to run the line on the port side and make the suggested adjustments. hopefully that helps. I think there is a shield missing. a light bulb went off thanks to your comments about attachment points not being fairleads. Looking at all the pics I could find, I now suspect this is a Mk1 Harken. Finding the missing shield could be a stretch.

Don't worry about the shield, it is more decorative than functional. If the sail is furled correctly the line will stay in place.

Tim,
You will want to moderately restrain the furling line as you pull the sheets to unfurl the sail. This will aide the line wrapping around the drum more evenly.

My furler drum seemed overly full and the line didn’t run very smoothly.

I replaced the furling line a d that made a huge difference. Same size line, but the new line laid in the drum so much smoother and tighter…

Best upgrade this year :)
