I recently purchased a 16 foot sailboat (pictures, linked). The person I bought it from knew *nothing* about it whatsoever. I am trying to figure out what exactly I have :) The serial number is XPY10144M79D-D. From that I determined it's a 1979 boat from "Privilege Yachting" - now "Catamaran Company". I would like to know a make/model so that I can do things like compare, figure out how to rig, buy parts, etc. Any advice is appreciated, Dan

Are you sure the HIN starts out XPY?

Your boat looks a lot like an O'Day Daysailor. If the HIN starts with XDY it could be an O'Day.

Could be

Could be an O'day or a Sailing Star, Dru. I had a mid-60's sailing star that looked a lot like an O'Day. It was listed as 17' but true Length was 16'9inches. The Older Odays I think had wood trim at the gunnells as did the sailing stars. the newer ones were more "modern" looking without the wood trim around the cockpit. Both of the originals I think had the mast stepped through the cabin hull. Mine had a compression post added inside and was stepped on top of the hull. If all the photo pages will display, you'll find a photo of my old boat on about the third photo page.

According to the CG Manufacturers database

XPY is PRIVILEGE YACHTING INC which went out of bussiness in 1999. See the attached webpage, not much info, they didn't make the boat, probably imported it.

It must be XDY

Steve, I can't check the HIN until this weekend - but looking at late 70's era O'Days on sailingtexas.com, this one is identical to what I have, even down to the paint color. They also have a number of 1977 O'Day's listed that are very similar. http://www.sailingtexas.com/soday17h.html http://www.sailingtexas.com/soday17e.html My boat has all of the original wood, in terrible shape. The boat's been sitting outside idle since 1995 (the last year it was licensed). The sails must be original, they're in bad shape as well. Thanks for the insight, I'm pretty confident now that I have a '79 O'Day. Will have to double check that HIN when I get the chance. Now I just need the ice to melt up here :)

O'Day

First glance I'd say an O'Day Javelin, But as Steve says- it does look like a Day salor. Check out Rudi Nickerson's web site DRI .com. He has O'Day serial listings which may be helpful to id it as an O'Day or not.
