Measurements

Hi water doctor, I have a 16 footer Ospray and I have tried all avenues to correct this situation. When I hoist the main sail up to the highest point of the mast, the boom ends up exactly at the entrance point on the mast for the boom. That would tell me that the sail I have might be a bit too large, I think? Or my mast is a bit too small. Do you know if the boom should be lower than the entrance point. Thus leaving hardly any head room and obviously dangerous if the boom is at your head level. I have saiedl slightly bigger boats and different brands but this one has got me all confused. I would appreciate any information you can help me with. Thanks Joe on the Fogcutter

Hi Fogcutter,
I don't know anything about the Ospray. The guy who would know is Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine. http://www.drmarine.com/
It's possible that the PO may have cut the bottom of the mast. I'm looking at the Ospray on this site: http://www.iheartodays.com/model_ospray.html Sometimes a mast can rot out from electrolysis due to a chemical reaction between stainless and Aluminum. I had to have mine welded a couple of years ago because of this. If this was the case with your boat, there is one remedy that I can give you. Find out from Rudy what the total length of the mast should be and figure out what you're going to need for a compression post in the cuddy to install a hinged Tabernacle. You may need to buy new stays, I'm really not sure. One thing is for sure. The mast will be easier to raise and lower.

A Quick Google search came up with these guys.

They can make you a new sail to the original specs. Perhaps they can give you the dimensions you're looking for. I still think you're hoisting the main too high. The boom should be below the slot. On a boat that size, you won't get clearance under the boom for your head.
The I heart O'days website shows the mast length to be 23' 7".

I just wanted to point out that any sail maker has access to the sail measurements to most sailboats including your Ospray. Some of these guys are asking a lot of money for sails. I found this out last year and my friend Wayne found out this year, but they are also hurting for business so don't be afraid to haggle with them. They can come down on their price without cheating on materials. We all know from experience, that some car dealers try to pull this crap on unsuspecting people all the time. You can tell sometimes when you see dollar signs rolling in their eyes as you're talking to them. :D
My friend went to Sperry Sails and the guy quoted him a price that he thought was way too high. He asked my friend what he thought a sail for a 22' sloop should sell for, and he told him $800 and the guy accepted his bid for a new sail. I saw the sail and the guy did an excellent job of making it. I went to Thurston Quantum in Bristol and the guy wanted $1170 for a new Mainsail for my boat. They originally made my sails in 1993. The women looked at my sail and said it was no good. She even continued to tear the existing rip that was already there. I wound up taking my sail to North Sails in Melville Boat Basin. The guy pinched my sail in a different spot in an effort to rip it, and he couldn't rip it. He tried a couple of other places, and the same thing. He replaced a panel, reinforced the batten pockets and fixed my sail. That was last year, and I'm still using it. So, get a lot of prices on a sail and don't be afraid to haggle with them if you think the price is too high.
