Help! I need another rudder on my O'Day22

A very enthusiastic sailor had his rudder snap in two Monday in a good gust. Now looking to replace or repair so he can get back on the water. Our season in western NY is short as it is, so does anyone have any suggestions or boats for parts for sale?

Rudder choices

Dave -

You have a couple of choices. First, you can call Rudy at D&R Marine (www.drmarine.com) to order a replacement. Alternatively, you can turn to an alternative such as Idasailor (www.idasailor.com) for a kickup rudder. I have had good luck with Rudy, and don't have any experience with Idasailor but they do advertise on this site. You're right, the sailing season is too short to waste. Hope this helps.

You could always try to build a new rudder out of plywood and fiberglass. One of the guys in my club built a new spade rudder for his O'Day 27 by using foam, epoxy, cloth, and filler. If you decide to go this route you should use Fiberglass Epoxy as Polyester resin will soak up water. Today they have foam, Epoxies, and a special type of cloth that can enable you to build a decent rudder at a fraction of the cost from a manufacturer. I'm told that Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic CT. has the original plans to O'Day rudders and etc given to them by Hunt Associates years ago and you can get a pattern from them at a certain cost. It's worth looking into.
