Ok, here is a real dumb question, but one I must ask! I am the new owner of a 1983 H31 and I need to know and understand the correct procedure for having a pump-out procedure completed on a 1983 H31. Where is the deck pumpout located and do I need to turn on a macerator pump etc? Thanks, Greg W.

Deck pumpout fitting is...well...on the deck...:)

It will look like your fuel and water fills, except instead of "fuel" or "water" stamped into the flange, it'll say "waste." No, you don't have to turn on any pump to pump out the tank...the pumpout pulls the waste out. It should have a fitting that threads into your deck fitting. Unless the marina has a dock hand to help you, you might want to take a dock mate who's familiar with your marina's pumpout equipment along the first time. Meanwhile, I suggest you check out the link below...it'll take you to a comprehensive "marine toilets and holding tanks 101 for dummies" manual.

mid-ship on the starboard

Greg: The holding tank is under your v-berth. It was originally plumbed to discharge overboard or into the holding tank. With the original setup, you just needed attach the pump out hose and empty the tank. You always want to be sure that the vent is clear. There should have been no reason for your boat to have a macerator if you are on the Great Lakes. Your boat may have been re-plumbed to ensure that all waste went directly into the holding tank (preferred method). I suggest that you check the vent to be sure it is clear (back flush the vent) and start pumping. If it does not work you may need to turn some handles under the v-berth.

Pump Out

Mine is a 84,the deck pump out is on the starboard side forward by the first station. Just prime the hose and put it in the hole. I was going to put a macerator on mine but my understanding they must be mounted horizontal so I just repaired my Whale pump. Works OK. Dennis.

Thanks Peggie: I have your book and will take another look to see what it might say about pumpouts. Greg W

Actually, "how to pump out" isn't in my book

It's so simple to do that it never occurred to me to include it...but it's turned out to be an omission that needs to be corrected in the next edition (if I can EVER find time to finish it!).
