Help getting albin engine ready for winter???

Hello Everyone.

My father is the owner of an albin vega 27 (more details to come)
and has fallen extremely ill and is unable to assist in
winterization. Having been aboard the boat since I was little, I
am reluctant to sell it. I have had it removed from the water and
put on a cradle for the winter. I now am faced with the task of
getting the boat ready for the winter months, and while I think I
have a grasp on everything that needs to be done... I know that
getting the engine ready might be difficult.

I am an engineer, and generally good with engines. Is there a
resource available here or elsewhere that could walk me through this
(maybe even with some pictures), or is that hoping for too much?!
Any help is appreciated, even if it is just helping me form the
right questions.

Thanks in advance!

Scott,
Check out the Vega Handbook/manual, which is also available at the "files"
par of the AlbinVega-yahoogroup. I am pretty sure there's a chapter on "how
to prepare my Vega for winter" or so in it.
Bye, Lucas

Hi Scott;

shouldn't be to difficult; drain the water, (you can always
fill in some antifreeze- when it comes out the other end..
then it's okay (if you run a Diesel engine- fill up the
tank.... another thing.. drain the water tank ..)
Be sure to unscrew the drain plug from the bilge (you
should see it on the outside- maybe youneed to scratch off
some paint to find it)
That'a about all...

Hi Scott!

In Sweden we take up our boats every season. The way I do it (which I think is quite normal) is the following:

When the boat is still in water: Run the engine for about 30 minutes. Change oil and filter.
When the boat is on land: Run the engine with anti freeze, first one bucket with only pure water to get rid of most chlorides, then one bucket with 50 % glycol. Losen the drain water plug and make sure the bildge is empty. Fill up the diesel tank or empty the gas tank. Empty and clean the water tank. Empty the water closet or fill it with some anti freeze. Empty the boat as much as possible if the weather is cold. Cover it with a tarpaulin. Make sure air can circulate.
In spring: Change diesel or gasoline filters (prefilter and fine filter if you have that). Change the zink anode on the propeller. Add grease according to the manual. Don´t forget to put back the drain water plug. Check or change the impeller. Put on new paint, polish, and back in sea for a new season.

Yours,

Björn
