I HAD A BILGE ODOR PROBLEM AND PURCHASED AN ITEM CALLED A BILGE BUSTER. I SAW THE UNIT IN PRACTICAL SAILOR. IT ELIMINATED ALL MY ENGINE AND HOLDING TANK ODORS. IT IS FROM A COMPANY CALLED QUANTUM PURE AIRE. IT WAS SIMPLE TO INSTALL AND TOOK ME LESS THAN 10 MINUTES TO SET UP. IN ABOUT 8 HOURS ALL MY ODORS WERE GONE AND HAVE NOT RETURNED. IF ANYONE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM I WOULD RECOMEND THEY TRY THIS. NO CHEMICALS ARE INVOLVED OR NEED TO BE PURCHASED. PRACTICAL SAILOR WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS ITEM. I HAVE LISTED THE WEB SITE I USED TO CONTACT THE COMPANY.

No need to spend money on this...

Just keep your boat/bilge/holding tank and head area clean. Change your waste lines when they need it and use a small, inexpensive pre-treatment system for your raw water intake for the head. I perform these functions as necessary and have never had an odor problem on my boat. For $289.00 I'll opt for more fun stuff and ust keep up my routine. It's amazing what people will spend money on just to simply avoid a little routine maintenance. Cheers, Bob

Bob, tell me about the pre-treatment system

I try to add freshwater to the head when I leave the boat, but I still get the egg smell from standing salt water left in the system somewhere. Are you referencing something that goes in the line between the seawater through-hull and the head? Something like that makes sense... can you post some details? Thanks, Trevor

I've heard good things about these things...BUT

I've also heard (And I think it was Practical Sailor) That leaving on these Ozone Generators too long and in a confined space will start deterorating some plastics and things like Foam cushions. So be careful a summer using one of these things and you matress might end up "all crumbly"

Pre-treatment

Picked one up at West Marine. It was around $10 and goes in-line just before the bowl. It's a small bottle of semi-solid chemical. As the intake water passes over it, it dissolves and enters the bowl. Installs in about five minutes, works great, one bottle lasts all season, and I never have head odors. Ozone generators have been around for decades and have claimed to be the solution for everything from bad air to baldness. Just another old tune repackaged. You'll probably be able to pick one up at most any yard sale in a few weeks...they'll be right next to the ab-rollers, fat-free grills, etc...you know, the stuff that was all supposed to change your life. Cheers, Bob

JUST TO LET YOU KNOW I DO NOT LIKE TO SPEND MONEY AND I AM A CHEAP GUY.BUT WHEN IT WORKS IT WORKS AND THAT IS WHY I RELY A LOT ON PRACTICAL SAILOR AND A BUNCH OF FRIENDS WHO HAVE THEM. THE BILGE BUSTER GETS INTO AREAS YOU CAN NOT GET INTO AND CLEANS THE AIR AS WELL AS ELIMINATING ALL THE ODORS. THE NICE PART IS THAT I CAN NOW SPEND THE TIME NOT HAVING MY WIFE TELL ME THAT THE ODORS ARE GOING INTO OUR SLEEPING AREA AND HER CLOTHES NO LONGER SMELL

can I help Tom

HI TOM, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE HEAD AND THAT IS WHY i WENT TO THE hEADBUSTER UNIT. IT WILL KILL THE BAD BACTERIA THAT YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT IN THE JOHN AS THAT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A GRAYWATER EFFECT. tHE OZONE LEVEL USED IS VERY SAFE AND WILL NOT EFFECT PEOPLE OR PETS OR ANY RUBBER ON THE BOAT BUT WILL STOP THE ODOR IN ABOUT AN HOUR OR LESS.ALSO ANY OTHER ODORS THAT YOU GET IN A HEAD ARE ELIMINATED.KNOW WHAT I MEAN. ALSO NO GROWTH OF MOLD IN SHOWER STALL.

more than one answer to the question.

Please read these articles first, they are courtesy of Peggie Hall & the US & Canadian Govt. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/english/protection/warnings/1999/99_62e.htm http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html Once you read these articles and see the lack of proof that these devices work. Then you have heard the stories from owners that have used these devices, who are you to believe? It appears to me that the truth is somewhere in between. There appears that these devices do work from the owners that have used them. There have been millions of these devices sold over the past 20-30 years. If they really did not work, I do not believe that they would be still selling at the rates that they do. The Practical Sailor view was not performed in a manner that they normally test a device (probably did not know what to do). The one caveot is the fact that they can produce lung problems. I believe it would be prudent to place these units on a timer and run them for a period of time several times per week or even a couple of times a day for a limited time period. I would think that not running it while you are aboard may be a good idea on the side of caution. It will probably not effect your breathing in an open space while the boat is well ventilated but being cautious on the side of safety may be in your best effort. I would like to hear the facts from users that have used these devices successfully and unsuccessfully too.

Real effectiveness vs. just an "air freshener"

As noted in both the US EPA and the Canadian govt warnings, low levels of ozone aren't enough to kill off the "critters" that cause the odors. Levels high enough to do that are highly toxic and dangerous. However, few people distinguish between something that actually gets rid of the sources of odors--eliminating them for good--and just freshening the air. So they're pleased with devices that do nothing more than freshen the air. It never occurs to 'em that the reason they have to continually or repeatedly run their "air cleaners" is because "cleaning" the odor out of the air is ALL the device does...leaving the source(s) of the odors alive, well and continuing to produce odors as fast the "miracle air cleaner" can mask it. If the device actually eliminated odors, running it just once would be enough to keep boat odor-free for months. But have you ever heard ANYone claim that they only have to run it once a year...or even once a month??? So, yes Steve...they DO work. It just depends upon how you define "works."
