I know it is a branded boat. But it is from 1987. Perhaps you can find the brand name of the pedestal (the helm hardware) to assist in your search. Common names from that era are Yacht Specialties, Edson Marine… Edson being the most likely.

Then measure the size of the shaft. Reach out to the manufacturer.

You’ll know what your system needs. Not what is on other boats of that vintage which may or may not match your boat.

If the nut is just a nut an not "special, decorative, etc., just take it to the local hardware store and match it up. I bought an extra just in case my original decides to go swimming......

The Merriman Yacht Specialties steering that I think (not sure on that) Hunter used on that boat had a 3/4" 10 thread wheel retainer nut. Edson sells that nut for $65 but a standard stainless "cap nut" or "Acorn nut" in that size would be considerably less expensive.

Good idea.
But...but...but --- take a few pictures and post them and I'll bet someone here will yell BINGO!
Good luck, great idea on the hardware store source for an acorn nut. The hardware store is my favorite marine store. ;)
Stu's right, show us a photo and we'll identify it.
