I recently bought a 1996 28MkII. I have noticed some newer boats have a molded helm seat in the cockpit. Is this standard on some models or a custom item? Thanks.... BD

Our 28 MKII came with one. We don't use it much because I can't stand between it and the wheel. We sometimes put one of those roll around cube type coolers there instead.

I built a narrow seat out of 1/2" seaboard and attached it with misc. stainless tubes and clamps I made from 1" seaboard. My boat had a open stern so I hung it entirely from the swim ladder. I hinged it and supported it with two diagonal braces that rested in sockets. When lifted from the socket the seat hung flat against the back and was not in the way.
What I built worked great and was pretty easy and cheap $20 worth of scraps.
I used a table saw and drill and a bunch of small nuts and bolts.

BD, I echo the comments that the seat Catalina designed is pretty useless. For one, it's hard to squeeze between the wheel and the seat when it's in place. Also, if you have any instruments on the pedestal guard, your vision might be compromised sitting directly behind the wheel. When I want to sit, I sit to the port or stern side, and it's very comfortable. Congratulations on your new boat. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I've been enjoying mine.
