I lost the antenna to my garmin and have bought a new antenna and started to run the wire where the old wire ran. When I got to the helm from beneath and looked up I was shocked at the rat's nest of wires that are punched thru. most concerning were two flat gray computer type multi pin wires that were folded in half and shoved thru the holes. I have not be able to have the windspeed portion of the wind indicator work since purchasing the boat and I was wondering if anyone else had this same haphazard arrangement of wiring and what do those gray computer wires feed and does bending in half lengthwise matter . It is a merriman helm and I believe that the depth sounder, distance/speed log and wind indicator/wind speed are original with the 1986 40. I believe that they are DataMarine.

I bieleve this is how Apollo 11 burnt up on the launch pad. The gray multi-wire cables wouldbe going to the wind and either the speed or the depth. Normaly the depth meter has a coax cable feeding it the signal but not always. Bending them certanly is not the industry standard way of doing it but since they are most likly analog signals should not hurt as long as there is not a short. Since you are there you might as well check out everything for a circuit and tidy up the rats nest. You never know when it will be important to have the ... not go off line.

Bill does yours look that way?- i am assuming that this is the way it was installed from the factory but not being the original owner i am not sure what was standard with the boat upon delivery.

I believe it was Apollo 1 that burnt on the pad, an unfortunate result of NASA's "Go Fever" and Apollo 13 that had the explosion en-route to the moon (spawning the infamous "Houston, we have a problem" quote), but it is amazing what PO's will snake through very small spaces!
