our boat has slightly more weather helm on a starboard tack than on a port tack. is this normal? we have had the boat for two years and this year i have been trying to remedy this problem. i tuned the rig and in the process found that the mast was not square to the boat. it leaned to port. i corrected this and it improved the balance but not completely. prior to tuning the rig there was lee helm on a port tack. after tuning there is weather helm but not as much as when on a starboard tack. neither is excesive. any suggestions on what i should look for as possible solutions?

Sounds to me you are already on the right track. You might have to allow for weight distribution in your boat when tuning the rig. So, where everything is right on measurements, you may have to offset your tuning to allow for things that can't really be measured.... just a thought.

as perfect balance is hardly attainable. Just seek a balance that would be considered acceptable to most and feels comfortable to you. Centering the mast and tuning the rigging is a must. Pay attention to mast prebend as it will amplify handling flaws. Check the weight distribution aboard and verify the centering and straightness of the keel and rudder in your next haul out.
