Hello all Reliance Owners - My name is Rick Goltz & I own hull # 3. I have been in e-mail contact with a few of you, but there must be many more Reliance owners out there somewhere, so I created this forum for us to meet and discuss issues near & dear to our hearts. So, if you own a Reliance or know someone who does, please register & weigh-in. Hopefully we can get Pierre to monitor this site & help answer questions and follow us around the world. Bye Rick Goltz

Great!!

Great!! My boat, I think was #8, I have owned it for about 5 years complete with leak in fuel tank down next to keel. Whenever I speak to or write to an owner of one of these boats I get nothing but enthusiatic replies. I did contact Pierre several years back. He indicated that he was still getting reports from owners around the world. I hope that this site does well. Gill

reliance with a BMC engine

I am thinking of buying a reliance but can't seem to find much info on them. This one has a BMC 2.5 engine in it . What are these engines like for durability and parts abailability ( I'm on the west coast)Are there any problems that I should look for. Thankyou for any help. I hope to be an owner as I like the looks of the boat.

...Never heard of a BMC...

Hi - My name is Rick & I sort of started this little Reliance forum. I own Reliance 44 hull # 3 named Voyager. Sorry, but I've never heard of a BMC engine. All 46 Reliance 44's were built as bare hull & decks & owner finished. Every one is different. I know this doesn't help in your question, but that's the way it is.... If you have any other questions please feel free to ask - That's the purpose of this site. Please ask the owner to register the boat on this site so we gather the boat into the fold - sort of speak. If you buy it, first of all, congratulations, then please register onto the site. Bye Risk

Other questions

Gill - Sorry I didn't answer all your questions in the 1st response... You asked about a 2 blade prop - Are you considering one?? What is your current engine/tranny/prop/aperature combination? I just bought a 4 blade variprop feathering prop. I'm not in the water yet so I can't expound on it yet. Why a 2 blade? I'm a hard-core cruiser & the ability to motor to windward for days at a time is important to me. I don't think a 2 blade would work for me. But, for a weekender or racer it may do the trick. Bye Rick

more questions

Hi Rick, thks for the response. I have a couple of more questions for you or any owners. The posts that I have read leads me to beleive that people are happy with there boats.I am woundering about sailing characteristics (upwind rough weather ,how fast that kind of thing and how safe do you feel) I would also like to know if all fuel tanks are in the keel, and is this an eventual problem , and can it be fixed or is it a major fix? I may need to transport the boat so does anyone know how high from keel to cabin top. also what are these boats usually priced at, this one has been sitting for a couple of years ,on the hard, needs a good cleaning ,varnish paint , a few stuck things from sitting. They are asking $60,000 . Do they hold their resale value. This british engine is my biggest worry, just don't know anything about them. Again thanks for any info you may be able to send my way. Bill

For what it's worth...

Hi Bill - There are several Reliance 44's for sale on the internet. Several are open-ocean cruise-ready and they seem to sell for around $150K. Mine was just appraised for $150K. If they're only asking $60K for yours, it may be a good deal, provided it's not going to cost over $100K to fix it up. I don't have any personal experience with the fuel tank leak - mine has never leaked, but i've heard of it before. As for the sailing charactistics, I wouldn't call Voyager a boat that can point especially high into the wind. In fact, I don't even try - if I have to go to windward I motorsail. A couple of years ago I motorsailed 1500 nmi from Chuuk, Micronesia to Kwajalein, Marshall Islands into 20 - 25 kts of wind & choppy seas. It was miserable, but it was miserable at 6 kts. No racy racer could have beat me there by steering higher & tacking. Beacuse of its very fine entry & strong hull, it never pounds. On easier points of sail, it's a thing of beauty - the long keel keeps it straight & the fine entry keeps it comfortable. Bye Rick
