Hello all

Hi, Im Arek.
I'm not sure why my first message disapeared, so here I'll try it
again.
I just recently joined your group because I was interested in Vegas.
But just few days ago I was able to purchase Vega with hull #993. Boat
was abandoned by her previous owner several years ago in a local
marina. Supposedly he worked on her for a long time. Well there is
pretty much an empty hull, mast, boom, jib and main, stove, water tank
and pile of rotting plywood panles which he apparently ripped all out
to redo everything from scratch. I know I'm up for a serious, long
lasting and expensive project. But I'm sooo excited at the same time!
I'm hoping that you guys will be willing to share your knowledge to
help me with bringing her back to open waters.

As a recent Vega owner, I've received great advice from everyone on the board. You
shouldn't have any problems getting good information.

I just finished the combi rebuild. The stuffing box (which has no stuffing) was leaking,
and I had to pull it to have new bushings pressed into it. Steve Birch has all the necessary
parts in a handy little kit.

Right now I'm working on new electrical. New DC panel, battery isolation switch,
dedicated starting battery under the cockpit (advice I got from this forum), new wire, an
anchor light (there isn't one currently), and replacing all the incandescent bulbs with LEDs.
Once you start working, you're going to find even more stuff to do.

As I was pulling wire, I happened to look under the head. When the previous owner
replaced it, he left the gate valve in place. So, it will be coming out this year and I'm going
to glass over the hole. It will allow me to lower the head about 3 inches so I can sit on it
without hitting my head.

The short end of this is "welcome aboard!" Everyone here has been great!

Glad to hear from you Arek, you've come to the right place; I've yet to raise a Vega question here that the board haven't answered.
And good luck with AV993, it sounds like you've got a shedload of work ahead of you - has #996 got a name?

Hi J,
Sounds like you're moving along with your project. I am wondering, do
you use marine grade wires for your electrical, and/or do you know does
that really matter?

Hi Bob,
Thanks for warm welcome I feel that with this group help I can pull it!
So I'm just discovering my first structural issue. As I was draining
bilge area, I noticed a crack, running several inches along port side
of the deepest area - I guess where gas tank used to be. I think I
should drill some holes from outside in a keel and get a feel for
what's going on. What do you think?

PS. no, no name so far, first she needs to look pretty :)

Arek,
I use marine grade. But I'm a bit of a stickler for those things. The wire is tinned and I
believe the cover is made of a different plastic. I just finished pulling everything except
the battery wire. Now I've got to find someplace for the inverter. I have a little time. I'm
still waiting on parts.

As an aside, I order everything electrical from Jamestown Distributors. They are fairly
competitive and have a pretty good marine selection.

Let me know if you have any questions as you get going.

Hi Arek, Congradulations on your new project. Hope you have as much fun with her as we've had with Lyric. Sad part is you'll probably never have another laid back Saturday with nothing that needs doing. The true definition of cruising is working on your boat in exotic locations! Walt
