Heeling

I'm looking to buy my first boat in the 22'-24' range. I've heard from a lot of Hunter owners that the 23.5' has a tendency to heel easy and most owners are in the practice of reefing early. Are the Catalina's and Capri's similiar...I assume it's common to the general design but thought I'd better ask to clarify. Thanks, Tom

The heeling tendency of a boat is due to design parameters, ballast, location of ballast, sail area, and beam. To say two boats are similar or different without looking at the spec's would be difficult. Most boats need to think about reefing at 18 knots of wind, although heeling can be controled by sail trim up to a point. If you know how to sail heeling should be no problem regardless of what boat you are sailing.

Tom, the capri and catalina are sold by the same company, just in case you didn't know.

While the Capri and catalina are made by the same mfg., their hull desgn, keel and sail plan are different. I think what this person may be interested in is how the two boats differ. Different boats may have different heel angle for the fastest, efficeint sail. I am a new C-27 owner and would like to know what the preferable heel angle is and the max heel the boat can take before washing the deck.
