Heel Indicators (Incline-O-Meters)

May I get input on where everyone has mounted their Incline-O-Meters? I have a 1992 Hunter 28 and was thinking about installing it on the helmsman seat. It would require me to look down and behind me but I don't think I will be constantly looking at my Incline-O-Meter while I am sailing. I don't like too much on my cabin bulkheads and there is not enough room under the companionway. Any suggestions on if the single (goes from 0 to 30 degrees) or double meter (has two tubes - one that is 0-5 degrees and another that is 0-30 degrees)is better? Thanks for your inputs.

put it where your wife can't see it

But seriously, mine is on the companionway bulkhead below my speed indicator. Handy for viewing and sail trim. I also put one with the 0-5 scale in the cabin, it's nice to know your trim when sleeping on the boat. If i sleep head downhill I wake up with a headache.

Put it close to your line of sight

During a sudden gust you will want to how far you were leaning. Their is comfort on our boat knowing what the boat looks like, where water flows, etc at 30 deg. or off the scale. If you can't glance at the meter during (while voices are excited and correction action is taking place) the event you will not have a point of reference for next time. The meter is also comforting and maybe entertaining for visitors. I want my visitors looking up enjoying the day instead of getting sea sick by looking places other than the horizon.

Inclinometers

I've mounted my Inclinometer on the center line just below the bridge deck on my Hunter 28.5. This puts it in my direct line of sight from the helm and I find that very useful. This foolproof little inexpensive device tells you a lot about sailing and I can't imagine not having and using one. I would recommend getting the model with a single tube going up to 45-deg.

You'll like it - put it where you can see it.

I have a 1991 H28. Installed it on the starboard side under the tri data display. Visible from the helm;look at it frequently since its there - went the single 0-45 degree.

Agree with Jim

What on earth do you need one for? They do not help to trim sails, go faster, make driving any easier. I've been sailing for over 20 years and have never had one and can see no good reason to.

interesting subject

I have a single tube, 0-45 mounted just underneath the companionway hatch (came with the boat when I bought it) and I watch it all the time.. No reason why I do, but just do. After awhile, I have noticed a certain 'sweet spot' that she likes to be heeled over at for maximum speed. (maybe a half knot) I guess one could use it in such a matter as to say; too much sail and why fight it, or too little sail and get her over that extra degree or too and get her on the fastest waterline, or loading the boat for an extended amount of time, are the loads even distributed through the boat in the lockers? Like others though, I wouldn't have bought one, but this came with the boat when I purchased her. Otherwise it really doesn't do much for me when sailing.
