heave to.... try heading up close to wind and let boat slow down sheet jib to port (for example)... backwinded jib sheet main in hard to centerline of boat push helm all the way down to stbd relax and wait for boat to settle down and go to about 50 deg. off the wind.... open your lunch box................ anyone agree, disagree?

Agree, but...

....if you play with the sheeting angle of your main, instead of sheeting it in as tight as possible, you can vary how much the boat points into or off the wind when hove to. Your sandwhich might taste better with the wind more on the beam, for example, or it might be easier to hop overboard for a swim!

Works for us!

Lunch, reefing, whatever. Heaving to is also highly recommended for riding out a bad storm. David Lady Lillie
