We have had a few (three or four) all time record setting hot days this last week. After two shocking inches of snow and a few days of freezing weather the previous week, we are hitting 60 degree temperatures in mid-late January. How are things on the east coast?

you have to ask??

We, too are enjoying the winter sailing... sunshine and 25 knots of breeze the other day... but the skiers in the family are way too unhappy about the lack of snow. Sorry east coasters, I know you are getting slammed!

Rare day

I had an excellent but unfortunately rare winter sail yesterday on Seattle's Lake Union. It was comparatively warm though cloudy. Of course there was no wind to speak of. The usual winter pattern here is breezy but rainy, or a nice sunny day with no wind. But I'm certainly not complaining. When it's cold they turn the water of on the docks, so I can't wash the boat and it turns into a moss farm. When it's warmer, it's usually raining and no time to be washing a boat. But yesterday was the winter Goose Bump race on Lake Union, so it was extra incentive to wash the boat and go out for a couple of hours. After attending the Seattle boat show last week, I realize I need to get on the water more. Spring is starting to feel closer already!

Snow

Yesterday (Sunday) we had around 36 inches of snow, winds 40-60 mph, and temps steady below 10 degrees F. Not much to else to do but watch our Pats win and shovel (and shovel). Big snow drifts today.

Hammersley Inlet near Olympia

This is a picture looking out Hammersley Inlet from Shelton toward Olympia. The fog came and went and there was no boat traffic - only floating debris, including some logs and one upturned stump with it's roots sticking up into the air. The sky was generally overcast all day with occassional sprinkles and rain and the air temperature/humidity was perfect for growing moss. Needless to say there is a lot of moss and mildew present. No sooner do I write this and there is enough sun (I guess that's what they call that thing) out there to cause a shadow!

We have 20 inches of snow here too

you just have to go up 8,000 to 10,000 feet. That is just about as close as I need it to be. Step outside and look around and you can see snow - it is just 50 miles away on top of a mountain where it belongs. I guess the skiers are having a hard time since it is so warm this year and not enough snow for them. I remember when I visited Connecticut, they had a 600 foot hill which the locals called a mountain. Here if it isn't 5000 feet tall, it is just a hill. My question to the east coasters is just a little poke at them. I have to watch all of their football teams on tv so I have to use whatever chance I get. All in good fun.

I really hate to do this, but,

call it vengeance for this lousy football season! ;D I took this shot about 2 minutes ago. Then I checked the outside thermometer. 70 degrees! (kidding-60 degrees) But I went outside barefoot. This is my backyard. Well, I'm off to the boat, might go sailing. It's hell up here at 48 deg. north, in the middle of winter. :) This weather is called the Pineapple express. If you east coasters have access to the weather channel you can see what the jet stream is bringing us from Hawaii. P.S. John, nice shot!

Hey Fred - So the Sun hole went your way???

Fred - That's a georgeous looking green yard! Do you have to water it much? Looking at your posting time I see it wasn't that long after my posting.... so that Sun blue hole that I saw here must have gone over your way, eh??? :)

4 degrees with 10 to 20 winds

It's not as bad as New England's, but the weather here in the Old Dominion is plenty chilly. Three years ago the last week in January was T-shirt weather - 70s every day, and I dove in the lake on Jan 31 just to say I did it. This year I might have to break the ice first. About two months remain to get through the winter boat projects list. Last night on the news I saw my old HS classmate Donnie Carcieri, governor of Rhode Island, commenting on the storm there. He looks a little different than he did 45 years ago - must be the weather.

Good Old Texas Coast!

We had a spell of cold weather on Sunday. The daytime high got down in the 50s. Might just try some sailing tomorrow since it will back to the mid 70s. Oh Ya. Around 12 to 15 knots on Saturday. Jon McClain
