You can just run the water from where it comes out of the exhaust manifold, before it goes into the mixing elbow through the heat exchanger on the water heater. This is the normal way on raw water cooled engines. However do not expect much in the way of hot water. As a general rule, you will not get enough heat from the engine, unless it is running under a load. If no load on the engine, it just doesn't develop enough heat to make hot water.

Do you have a heat exchanger? I thought about this a bit for my YSM12.
If you have a heat exchanger all you need is an electric circulation pump.
However you have a 30' boat and a 12 hp engine. You need all the hp you can get.

Forget it. I have a 20 hp 2QM20 and all the raw water runs through a coil in the hot water tank (also has electric coil for use dockside) before going into the exhaust. Motoring all day long doesn't even make the water luke warm. The Yanmars are very cool running for diesels and there just isn't enough heat in the raw water. If I heat up the hot water with shore power first, a long run under power will keep it warm a bit longer but it won't turn room temperature water into anything you would want to shower with.
while sailing a friends boat in gulf of mexico, where water is warmer than in maine or kalifornikation, i found the 3gm also runs a lot cooler than i expected----wish my perkins did that--is like magic!!!! my 2qm20h runs at about 100-120 max--is good---nothing else added to the stock engine....gotta love yanmar!!...

Well, I guess its the solar shower for me. Maybe I can store the solar hot water in an insulated container to use at night.

What temperature would it take with raw water to heat up a water heater tank? My gets to 135-140 if I motor for an hour or so.Also how fast does the electric heaters take to heat the water to the max temperature it will get to?
I thought as an option of using a generator to heat the water with the electric coil. I hear it stays hot for a long time even with out power to it.

1. Normal Universal engines for C30s were the M25 and M30 series with freshwater cooling systems and heat exchangers. The thermostats were either 160 or 180 F. That determined the temperature of the freshwater that was used to heat the HX inside the domestic hot water heater (not the engine HX, although, obviously, the engine's freshwater runs through there, too). It takes us about 40 minutes of motoring under load to get the domestic tank hot (6 gallons, Seaward tank).
2. The electric heaters take 15 to 20 minutes to heat the same tank. Don't need to leave the heater on all the time, all it does is overheat the water.
Depending on the tank and the insulation, it'll last for a few hours. Our experience is that with hot water in the tank at night, it's tepid, at best, by the time morning rolls around.
What we've done is simply change our routine. Instead of showering in the morning, we shower in the afternoon, or before dinner, when the engine has heated the water. We also have a solar shower which we can use inside the head/shower compartment/cabin on our boat, thus utilizing the shower drain instead of having to sit out in the cockpit.
