Has anyone successfully removed the heat exchanger on the Four-91/W30? I can loosen 3of the f nuts, but the forward most nut seems unreachable even with a flex-head socket. How have you cleaned "in-place"? I plan to circulate some sort of cleaning agent (CLR perhaps?) using an old bilge pump. Have you "reamed" the tubes? If so what tool did you use? (I am afraid to force anything through these tubes, which appear to be just less that 3/16") I have NOT tried to remove the exhaust manifold Engins is in boat and on the hard. Thanks painman

Here is my secret method for cleaning that heat exchanger. Remove the raw water line from the input side of the pump. Take a piece of hose long enough to go into a five gallon bucket. Put two gallons of muriatic acid in the bucket and crank the engine. As soon as the the two gallons is gone, shut the engine off, and put the origional hose back in place. This should take you a couple of minutes. Let the muriatic sit for approx. FIVE minutes, and crank the engine back up. Let it run long enough to flush the system good. JOB DONE. Hardest part is figuring out how to not have to inhale the fumes. If you do not let the acid sit it will not harm anything. Muriatic works on organic materials much more quickly than it does on metals. Had a very good diesel guy give me this idea in Florida a few months ago, as I was having the same problem of trying to figure out how to get the damn thing off. This engine also had an oil cooler and tranny cooler on it, so got them all cleaned.

Thanks Nice N Easy. I had considered muratic acid but currently she's on the hard. Was going to use a 5-gallon bucket , hoses, and CLR with an old Bilge pump. Only problem with this technique is I don't have any "warm water" for the CLR tpo functon properly. I may have to postpone until I'm back in the water and try your technique. andy

acid flush
I did an acid flush last weekend using 1/3 gal of muriactic in a 5 gal bucket. Let rest for 10 minutes. Once I started the the engine the discharged water was black with crap. Took the boat for a 1/2 hour run just to make sure all acid was flushed amazing how much better she is discharging, good luck

Heat Exchanger Cleaning
Mission Accomplished I finally found a piece of "teflon rod" just the right diameter to run thru the tubes of my 'heat exchanger'. As usual, it was one of those crazy 'heads down'and use a mirror to see what you need to do' type of jobs. What a pain in the butt. I couldn't get thru two tubes - one on each side of the exchanger. That's OK as there were 39 tubes each side. Then I set up my "superduper Rube Goldberg flushing system" = garden hose "Y's" and shutoff valves. Used an old bilge pump to push 50/50 Muriatic acid & water thru system. Wait a few minutes and flush away. Holy Cow! The 'stuff' that came out! By 3rd flush it was very clean so we quit (also out of a 2 gallon solution). Ran the garden hose water thru engine about 10 minutes and hope that took all the lingering acid away. BTW - I also found out that what I found INSIDE the heat exchanger was a broken piece of a "pencil Zinc". (My manual doesn't mention this at all.) I found some for $1 each at the local "Used Marine Supplies" and bought three. Plan to change every 6 months - well, at least inspect them at that interval. I also changed the " thru hull fitting " on the input side of the Raw Water system. It was partially blocked with calcium deposits and so I went up to a 1/2" brass thru hull. I have just finished installing a new thermostat. With all these changes I am planning on haveing a "Cool Running Engine" (My system also has two (2) rdaiator caps. One on top of the engine - forward and the other of course is on the "expansion tank".) painman P35 - 1978

I have a friend with a P35 and an "Atomic 4". In fact, hsi engione is brand new. There is NO heat exchanger on his boat, so maybe yours is the same (Trace the hoses to see of you have just one water pump, etc.) However, it would probably be a good idea to annualy clean your system, as you are putting (perhaps) salt water through your system.
