Hi folks... thought I'd share this drone shot from a French crew in The Ocean Race.
A wild ride for sure... these guys are laughing and joking like they're driving rental go karts. I posted this just for fun, not trying to pitch the old guard against the new.

I love the drone shots! That was awesome! @Joe Thanks for sharing.

It's incredible how fast those sailboats go. I recall watching the Volvo ocean race a few years ago when they were coming out of New Zealand and sailing out the bay, you could see the power boats trying to keep up with them. That certainly put things into perspective!

Not sure what was more impressive….the speed of the boat, or the skills of the drone pilot!

Also interesting to see that the boat is pretty much controlled from inside the cabin at a control panel. I didn’t even see a helm outside…

When the camera inside the boat panned forward, and you could see through the front windows, I kept thinking that they need some rocket ship chairs up there, like the space shuttle, but on the water.

A whole lot different than my sailing:)

Thanks for sharing,

Greg

The morning race report had one of the boats doing 36knts. in that sea condition. A bit bumpy to say the least!

Hey,

That sailing performance is very impressive. The ride inside the boat looks very calm compared to view from the drone. Amazing how fast that boat is.

I just want to mention that Malizia is not a French boat but is from Monaco, They have many sponsors but their main partner is the Yacht club Monaco. Attached is their team picture with a Monaco background setting from their own site.
:banghead: I'm missing your point, mon ami. Never said it was a French boat. It was a crew speaking English with a French accent. My apologies to the Pricipality of Monaco and their stockholders.

Exciting video for sure.

The Malizia team appears so calm at 27knots in the Southern Pacific. Roaring along.
"It's nice and sunny, the boat is in one piece and we're in first place, so there is a lot of positives to think about today."

The 26th was not a good day...
Team Malizia's Rosalin Kuiper suffers a head injury near Cape Horn - she is conscious, stable and recovering
At around 0900 UTC on 26th March Rosalin Kuiper suffered a head injury after she fell from her bunk when the boat turned and slammed unexpectedly in heavy sea conditions. Rosalin was off watch and sleeping when the boat wiped out due to a large wave off the South American coast near to Cape Horn. When this happened Rosalin was thrown from her bunk and hit her head just above her right eyebrow.

reports from the American boat: "For the last 48 hours we have been surrounded by towering waves and wind-blown seas far more typical of the Furious Fifties, and visually at least it finally looks like the place we all came here to see. As grueling as constant 35-45 knots of wind and the minefield of giant holes in the ocean around us can be, it’s part of what makes the Horn meaningful: you have to have earned it. 27 days is a long time in the cold south and we have had our fair share of issues to overcome, but I don’t think we have seen true 'Southern Ocean' conditions, until now."

One might ask.. Why?:yikes:
The logical answer ? ? Because..

Wow again! That was the most exciting sailing footage I've seen in a long time. I loved the deadpan comment at about 7:02 " it makes perfect sense why the boat gets so uncomfortable now".
