Heart Invertor/Charger. Is it Smart?

My 1998 Hunter 376 has a OEM Heart 2500W Invertor/Charger. I have problems over the winter with my house batteries (two 4Ds) tend to overcharge (boil dry). We leave the boat unattended, but plugged in for weeks at a time during the winter months and turn off all 12v items including 12v fridge.

My question is: is it time to upgrade my 15 yr old charger that is "smarter"? Or there another option?

Batteries

My 4D's were boiling dry and gasing non stop when I found out they were history and were bad and replaced with 4-6 volt batteries and that was 3 years ago.
I was told the batteries needed replacing because they were drawing a charge all the time,been so much more happy with my T-105's and still have my 2500 Freedom inverter/charger.

Bob, ya probably should check the float voltage that the Heart is going to after the batteries are fully charged.. MainSail's site has all the references for proper volts.. I wouldn't replace the Heart unless the brain has gone south and is is not holding a good float voltage. Also make sure the switch on the charger is set for flooded batteries, and all the connections are good between the charger and the batteries. As Nick said, when the batts get sulphated pretty badly, they can boil off, but do check the charger before putting in new batts..

We have a Heart on the boat that sits in the yard. We use it while we are there living on the boat plugged in but when we leave the boat is unplugged and we have the batteries on one of the six 80 watt panels that charges through a Blue Sky MPPT controller. That has worked well. The only thing left on is the auto bilge pump for any nuisance rain water.

Leaving a solar panel on the boat even if it wasn't permanently mounted might be an idea,

Does the Heart Invertor/Charger properly charge and then maintain a float charge on the start battery when the 2 house 4Ds are completely disconnected ? ( Assuming your start battery is OK )
Have you checked the specific gravity of the electrolytes in each of the two 4Ds ?
Answering those 2 questions should tell you whether the problem is the batteries or the charger.
