Hi,

Getting a new furling headsail for our O'day 25, and wondering if the 25 or similar size O'day boat owners would chime in.

I've received some feedback in the other forum as part of a thread on purchasing a furler and sail, but wanted to specifically ask this:

Would you buy a 135% or 150% Genoa for the O'day 25?

Would you get the foam luff for headsail shape while reefing?

We plan to only run this one headsail as much as possible. It will be paired with a CDI FF4 furler with ball bearing.

We sail on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, out of Rochester, NY. I've only sailed for one season, so I don't have a good feel for what a typical season is like for wind. We did feel overpowered last year many times with a big (bigger than 150%) genoa, but it is pretty blown out.

Thanks!

I sail out of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. I have a 135% on my 25 Oday and I fee lit's the best choice. More often than not we have very little wind in the later part of July and a lot of August. I would also go for the luff pad. I am using the CDI ff4 and it has been flawless

I've sailed my 25 for 6 years. 5 of which I had no furler, a 100% and a 150%. Used the 150 only in lighter air. Anything over 10kts and it felt very over powered. Granted, it's an old blown out 150, but it still seemed too much for the boat. I purchased a CDI with a 135 last season and used it full most of the time. It sails reefed very well (i've got a rope sewn into the luff instead of the foam pad). To do it again, I wouldn't think that I'd need anything bigger.

Re: 135% is perfect

ok, this is stupid i know, but how can i tell a 150% from a 135% or a 100%. (without laying them side by side) is there a number on the sail? Right now my sails are in storage and i can't easily get them out and check to see.
thanks

You'll need to measure the sails. But sometimes the size or measurement is marked on the sail, usually on the clew or tack.

"To Figure % Overlap Multiply the boat’s “J” dimension times the headsail percent you want. That should be equal to the sail’s "L/P" (Luff Perpendicular) is the length of a line drawn from the clew to the luff, intersecting the luff at 90 degrees.) If your “J” is 10 feet and you want a 150% the L/P must equal 15 ft."

Keith,

If you drank less rum, you might be able to figure it out.
