Hi all... I'm sure this has been brought up before, but as ideas and materials progress, I thought to bring it up again. I would like to replace my (leather-like?), zippered and stapled headliner with something fresher, providing better accessibility. What sort of materials are folks using these days. Any pics would be great! Cabin top is probably 12' x 7' at its biggest

Are you thinking about a soft headliner or something more rigid?

If the cabin top is pretty flat, then I would consider some sort of bead board (or plastic equivalent). I saw some remodel on YouTube and it looked very nice…like a Passport headliner.

If you're going to use cloth (I'd advise against it), make sure it has some stretch to it. It's really difficult to get material that doesn't stretch to conform without leaving wrinkles

I replaced my vinyl wrapped masonite with wainscoting (bead board) panels painted white & solid teak trim pieces. Big improvement.
I have considered something like this. My 1975 boat has made at a time when popcorn ceilings were thought to be luxurious. So, it has this weird bumpy plastic of some sort that is starting to come off in a few places. I've considered putting something like what you have, but as removeable panels (maybe secured with velcro). That way, I can easily remove/replace/repair, but also gain access to otherwise hidden wiring.

What did you use for wainscoting and how did you secure? Anything you would do differently, next time?

I bought 4x8 panels @ lumber yard, used old pieces as template, for stringers I fiberglassed some extra marine 1/2 “ plywood strips I had from another project matched existing stringers, panels are screwed to stringers. I needed more stringers because new headliner has 4 sections instead of original 2. The only thing I would do differently is to do the project sooner….like 20 years ago when I bought the boat.
