head stink

I have checked the archives on this problem, but see nothing that anwers my question... Just emptied the head at a pumpout staion on our "new" (84) Cat 30. I achieved a complete pumpout, but notice that after using the head once or twice, and leaving the valve in the "pumpout" position, I come back to the boat a day or two later to find water in the bowl. It isn't seawater, because I close the through-hull fittings every time I leave the boat, so it must be waste from the holding tank. Any ideas on why this occurs, and how it can be prevented? The boat does not smell very pleasant when I return to it.

Don't be timid

I've noticed that if I don't pump enough strokes--both in the wet bowl and then in the dry bowl positions--the discharge hose doesn't clear past the anti-syphon valve at the top of the loop. This is very important, because there is a lot of volume between the bowl and the loop, and it must be rinsed and dried (not literally) after each use. However, any liquid that is left in that section of hose will seep back into the bowl. I use about 8 wet and 6 to 8 dry strokes. Good Luck, John ,S/V DOXOLOGY

Thanks

I'm new to the baoat and have a lot to learn. Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot. I plan to become more "intimately" involved with the waste system in the boat this afternoon.
