Head smell.. crazy idea?

So... there I was... pondering.... I am replacing everything in the head system except the holding tank... Working on a few other projects I have used 3M undercoating spray (companion way steps non skid rubber pads rehab, between the wood and engine heat shields) We all know hoses will leach smell. Since I'm going to install a new head and hoses, I'm considering the crazy idea of spraying them with 3M rubber undercoating on the before I install them.... Thoughts? Criticism?

I should elaborate... spraying just the hoses, not the pooper!

I don't know about undercoat but I have read about people wrapping the pipe in heavy duty plastic wrap. I have no direct experience.

do you plan on painting over the clamps also?...

my first thought is, if you use the top quality hose in the first place, you have no need for anything else to try and keep the odor from escaping....

my second thought is, as tough as the hose is to work with WITHOUT any thing covering it, it will be a real pain to work with when it has a coating that will peel away from it....

my third thought is, i wouldnt want to be the guy who has to repair a system that someone fouled (this may be spelled f-o-u-l-e-d, but its pronounced entirely different) up so bad during the install by trying to paint it with a coating....

my fourth thought is, doing it right with the proper product the first time will be the cheapest, quickest and best for long term and any future repairs. IMHO

I am totally onboard with Centerline on his opinion. If you get the quality level 2 hose (ie not the miracle stuff) and you take care of your head, i.e. treating the holding tank appropriately, rinsing the lines, preventive maintenance, you will get probably in the area of 6 years plus out of your plumbing. No need to "sugar coat" it.

You are probably gonna be fishing the stuff that peels off out of your stringer weeps for the next generation. IMHO, someone has already thought of that and perhaps had failure.

Go "with the flow" lol.

Cheers and good luck.

If you need some tips on running plumbing through bulkheads, new holding tank options, preventive maintenance, oh.. and how to test your hoses for permiating... just ask. It all starts with a really hot cloth wrapped around one of the hoses.. and then build on that.

Cheers

I was just throwing out a crazy idea... ended up ordering the good hose and replaced everything. The only issue was that I had to make the holes through the bulk head a little lager to get the new hose through... There was sweat, cursing, and scraped knuckles, but it all worked out.

The one thing that absolutely will stop odor (I did some multi-year testing of hoses for Practical Sailor using 6 side-by-side holding tanks--glad that one is over!) permeation is aluminum duct tape (I used Nashau). Gases will not permeate metal, even the thinnest layer, which is why aluminized Mylar balloons hold air so well.

While I would certainly rely on good hose and installation as my first line, I can imagine wrapping hose in aluminum duct tape for trouble shooting and as a delay tactic until haul-out. We tested the material outdoors on bad hose for 2 years and it held up very well.
