Head Sail or motor cheaper for Catalina 22

I am new to buying a sailboat.

I am looking at 2 different Catalina 22's.

Both are around the same year and both are pretty much the same condition.

1 doesn't have a motor. The other doesn't have a headsail.

Which do you think would be cheaper or easier to obtain?

A used motor can come off of any small boat. A used sail cannot. To my mind, all other things being equal, (condition of the mains'l okay for both?) I will buy the boat with the head sail and pick up a used motor. Statistical probability says you will have an easier time locally finding a small motor.

That being said, there are lots of on-line outlets if you don't mind paying freight where you can pick up a good condition used sail.

Spend a day on-line shopping for head sails and let your research be your guide.

I have searched a little for a few days.

Looks like a head sail new is about $400-$600 for the cheapest. And cheaper for storm jibs.

Pretty much all the used outboards I have found is about $400+.

This is why I am asking. I don't know if there is something I might be missing. Would there be specific places to look for either to get the best deal? Or would it be best to hit up the marinas in my local area?

Since I don't have either boat yet, I was hoping to find what others think would be the easiest route.

Thanks philwsailz. I will take your advice accordingly.

You probably are going to need both. For sure you will need a headsail. So, assuming you are either going to part with some cash for one or the other, I would buy the boat that is in best shape and might have some other qualities you like over the other.

If you are in the DFW area, the area is saturated with C22s of all makes, models, conditions, and lots of extras for sale. Check Craigslist for sails, I see them frequently, also, Mariner Sails in Dallas has a rotating selection of used/reconditioned sails. Outboards are also plentiful on Craigs so keep an eye out. 5-6hp is plenty for the C22 and the older 2 stroke engines are much lighter and cheaper.
