Sometimes not worth messin' with.

Paul: Sometimes these repair kits work and sometimes they don't. You head is at the age that is NOT worth fixing. I just got a new Jabsco ($110-120) last year. So, So performance. If you can step up and pay the $200 for the Cricket and it will fit, you may want to consider on of them. Peggy recommends that you just cover the platform with a piece of teak. IMHO I would not do this. It is not very sanitary (if you now what I mean). I would consider a piece of poly or something that can get wet and icky and still be cleaned.

Groco?

Mine has a Groco which I have rebuilt once. The kits are pretty expensive ($50-60) but usually all you need is the joker valve. Fortunately I found a kit last year for $10.00 on this site from a guy who saw a bunch on closeout. Depending on how much it is used, I would probably bite the bullet and get a new head. I don't know if the Cricket will fit but if I replace mine, that will probably be the one I would opt for. You may have to get rid of or raise the teak seat.

Sealander 752 ?

I used to own a 86 28.5 and It was equipped with a Sealander Head, model 752. I believe Sealander is no longer in business. There was a place in fort Lauderdale that carried parts (before 1996), but don't remember the name. Steve is right, the boat is 15 years old, don't mess with the head as it's not worth the time and aggravation. They are cheap enough that you can get a brand new unit for at a low price. Good Luck

Ditto

Steve and Claude are both right. My '87 28.5 had the SeaLand 752 in it, they ARE out of business and the head is NOT worth wasting your time on. I found that the Groco w/bronze base fit very nicely (only have to drill two new holes)and works great. First thing I had to replace 3 yrs. ago when I bought the boat and its still goin' strong with very little maintenance.

head fix

I have a Jabsco ITT manual head and bought a rebuild kit at Boat US for about $35. I used all the parts, lubricated the O ring, and was back in buisness (so to speak!). It might help to take the pump assempby to the marine store with you. They may be able to help with rebuild or replacement parts.

28.5 head

Replaced the sealander 752, 87' vintage at the beginning of this year with a Wilcox Crittenden Head-Mate Marine Toilet which fits very nice. I actually cut a piece of 1 1/4 " hardwood and made a template, bolted the template to the head floor using existing holes and just put new holes into template that match the Wilcox, it also raised the head a little higher which we needed. The rebuilt kits are reasonable and I think I got the head for $129. after doing a little searching around, hoses fit fine and it pumps great. tom
