Hi folks, Mistress: I just put my nwly purchased C27 in the water and have found that the manual pump does not work, i.e. it doesn't draw seawater. I suspect that this is fairly common. Is it easy to fix? I have seen rebuild kits for sale. What should I do? Mike.

it Happens!

Mike, First, I'll play dumb...Is the intake seacock open? <grin> Sometimes on by boat, when first launched, it takes a few pumps (20-30) to prime the pump. Even it this is so, you should feel some resistance as the plunger begins to work. Or it could be that the plunger is dried out. In this case, it may be time to rebuild. Kits sell at the marine stores and catalogs for $30-40 and takes about an hour to do. If it's a Groco HF, there's a guy on this site who has access to a good deal on a kit (Check the archives).

First, make sure the seacock is open...:)

If it is, the problem could be due to any of several causes--an air leak in the intake hose...pump seals that are totally worn out...sand or grit in the pump. Once you've eliminated a closed seacock or an air leak, if the head is more than a few (2-3 max) years old, you're prob'ly better off replacing it than trying to rebuild it, 'cuz a rebuild kit (all the seals gaskets and valves) will cost you at least half the price of a new one. In fact, BOAT/US has Jabsco toilets on sale right now for $99.
