We own a 1984 Catalina 30. During our last sail - we were on a tight port tack when I noticed the head overflowing. The head is on the port side. Can you tell me how to fix this disgusting problem? Is it because the holding tank is full? Do we need to rebuild the head? Where do we get a kit to do this? Can we do it while the boat is in the water? Thanks

Close the seacock when underway!!!!

As for rebuilding the head, yes it can be done while the boat is in the water. The head pump is the only thing that has to be taken apart. And it should be done every year or two as preventive maintenance. But that's not the solution to this problem. You've discovered first hand that seawater can be forced up the head intake when the boat is underway. Seacocks should always be kept CLOSED except when the head is in use!
