BOB

I have a 1982 Catalina 30. I have replaced everything from stove to engine and am very happy with this ship. My problem is that in the last few months I have been noticing a odd oder from what i beleive to be the holding tank area, and a terible smell when I flush the head. I have been using orderless salts, but the oder remains faint but there, How does one solve this without total replacement. Too much replacement already..thanks bob

Head odors

Three prime causes of head odors are: 1. Sea water remaining in the bowl contains a variety of "life" which dies, decays, and emits odors. Keeping the bowl dry while you are not on board helps. 2. Older hoses become sufficiently porous that minute amounts of odor laden moisture leak through. Sometimes a clamp loosens a bit. Replacing hoses that are a few years old with high quality hose made for "head" use makes sense. 3. A small crack in a holding tank can produce a surprising amount of "aroma".
