Half of the mirror in the head fell off the wall the other day while sailing (Hunter 31). I was surprised to see it was a glass mirror. I was grateful it didnt shatter! The glue on the wall apparently gave up the ghost and it slipped out of the holders. Anybody have experience with this replacement job? Is plexiglass a better way to go? Seems like a pretty simple job, but talking to someone who has done it always helps to avoid any unseen pitfalls.

Not the best

I didn't do the best job when I replaced mine in '96. I couldn't find a good substitute material so I went with regular mirrored glass. I used a ton of adhesive. I probable covered 80% of the back with it. After 9 years the area that didn't have adhesive is loosing the reflective backing. Next time I might go with polished metal like they use in schools and parks. Good luck Kurt

Safety Glass

Replaced the bulkhead mirror in my aft quarterberth recently. The old one was 1/4" glass that had begun to lose its silvering on the backside. Talked to the people at the glass shop who suggested using a plastic adhesive backing they install on mirrors for safety. If the mirror breaks it will remain in one piece. Also had the mirror drilled with four holes to hang mirror with the star headed screws. Should the mirror break or even shatter it should remain in one piece on the wall. Hope this helps you.
