Head Ideas

Admittedly, I am 6 feet tall. This does not normally prove to be a problem on our little boat as much of my time is spent with knees bent. However, the head is in such a spot as to make it as inconvenient as possible. This, too, is not normally a problem as the transom makes an excellent platform for most things. There are those times when head usage becomes a necessity, and sitting down to do the business is counter to one of the advantages to being the male of the species.

I am wondering if anyone has done anything different with the head, or if anyone has any ideas. We are building out the galley on the port side in the off-season. We would like to keep at least the starboard bunk at the same length. I was considering moving the head aft...then moving the starboard berth aft, after removing the sink and icebox (which will be on the port side).

I am open to any suggestions or ideas, no matter how wild, people might have for getting me the ability to do #1 without having to sit. The current configuration, with that 2-3 inch board from the bulkhead forward, is just not cutting it. So, fire away with those wild, crazy ideas!

sounds like you are already determined to mess up a classically simple and very workable interior.....dont agonize over something that takes up two minutes now and then.....get a large empty detergent container ,push the spout out and i assure you it will last all night and most of the day..dont make work for yourself......go sailing......mini pearl v2660________________________________

Sitting down is much more sanitary on a boat. Essential on a wooden boat and
a good idea on a boat of any material.

Well Jack, a sit-down #1 certainly is splash-free ;-)
I have a padded edge on the platform the head is attached to, and can kneel on that, just getting my head into the "head" space. (I'm 6' 3" so I can see where you're coming from!)

One thing I did when I installed the KISS holding tank was to remove that little header over the head doorway. I found it easy enough to sit down and get my head twisted in past it, but getting out became a yogic exercise.

My final solution was to buy another boat (Albin Ballad) where everything is just a wee bit larger! I can even stand straight up under the closed companionway hatch in the galley!

Aha! The detergent container ... I keep looking at those when I recycle them, knowing, deep down, there was another use for them. Thanks espin !!

I knew I came to the right place! The detergent container is most certainly going on the "things to try for awhile" list! I've also tried kneeling, which seems to work well...except in the middle of the night, when my hamstrings start to cramp up. I'm pretty sure a new boat won't be necessary...but one must leave their options open.

I'm going to try removing the header board. However, I need to find a way to brace the forward head wall. Maybe glass it in, or perhaps I can screw it in place? We'll see.

All excellent suggestions!

Splash a little water in the bucket and while below pee in the bucket, and dump it overside.

I removed the header board a year ago and did nothing to tie in the
bulkhead any more than it is. I see no problems resulting from that. doug

I did the same as Douglas with no problems. But a small angle bracket from the bulkhead corner up to the ceiling might work if you're concerned.

Ask The Crew if you can have one of her empty softener bottles (as used in the washing machine to make all your clothes soft and smell nice) - that keeps the subsequent contents smelling like like fresh flowers for ages afterwards - just make sure you label it clearly!!

Ok. I can take a hint. Both the wife and I totally embrace the detergent/fabric softener bottle 100%. What a brilliantly simple idea! I'm convinced...the head stays where it is at...without the head board.

Thanks again for the brilliantly simple solutions!
