Beneteau 393 EYC
The hoses on the aft head of my 2003 Beneteau 393 are permeated. I plan to change them out completely early this spring. Access to the lower section of hoses appears to be pretty good. However, I can't see or appear to be able to access the top of the pump out hose where it connects to the deck mounted pump out fitting. Will I have to remove this fitting and access the hose clamps from the deck? If yes, is there any advice on how to proceed? This is my first attempt at this kind of work.

I doubt that the hose & clamp will fit through the hole in the deck. You may need to r/r the tank and/or other items depending on where you can gain access.

My neighbor has a B 39 and also a similar problem with one of his tanks.

It's not totally impossible to remove hose clamps "blind"...

A headlamp and/or a drop cord light along with a 90 degree ratchet screwdriver helps. Heating any hose makes it a lot easier to pull off a fitting...and warming a hose (note I said "warming"...overheating a hose will damage it) and lubing with K-T makes it a lot easier to put the new hose onto a fittiing. Slip the hose clamps onto it before you put it on the fitting...then you can slide 'em up to tighten.

If you do have to remove the fitting to get the old hose off and new hose on, the clamps will not go through the hole...so you'll have to loosen the clamps from below first and tighten 'em up from below anyway.

I'm not saying it'll be easy...but it IS do-able if you have enough patience and maybe some help from a very small person.

I have found that a quarter inch socket drive with a short handle works well in tight spaces. Usually you need a 5/16" socket.
To plan out the project better, first reach in with your digi camera and take a bunch of pix to look over on you computer screen... At least you will have some orientation while groping around with one arm. :)

That's a great idea!

And I'm gonna use it in my new book!

Don't wait till spring! The hose will never smell less than in the winter. The cold de-activates whatever it is that smells.

Do you need to change out the vertical pumpout hose? I'm thinking that unless you let your tank get REALLY full, that hose likely didn't have 'stuff' sitting in it for long periods of time and permeating the hose with smell. Certainly, if you can get it replaced, it would be a good idea. But the hose that feeds into the tank will be the priority. My pumpout hose is impossible to reach so I'm going to cut the lowest 3' off and splice in some new hose there with a coupler. The upper part of the hose doesn't get standing 'stuff' so I should be good.

Trident 101 is my preference. Surprisingly easy to work with.

Is this site running a sale on it these days? I got a pretty good deal here 2 years ago...

You have it backwards, gettin'...

A pumpout hose coming from a fitting at the bottom of the tank will always be full of standing waste as high as the level in the tank...so it will be the most likely to permeate before any other. The line from the toilet to the tank goes to a fitting at the top of the tank, (at least it SHOULD BE!)...so while it's certainly vulnerable to permeating, it's not quick to do so.

However, it's never a good idea to replace only some of the hoses because, by the time you get the first one done, the next one stinks. So do them ALL and get it over with!

Unfrotunately your idea of cutting off the bottom 3' of pumpout hose is likely to leave you wth remaining hose that still stinks 'cuz odor spreads all over a section of hose. Since it appears you have access to the bottom half the hose, replace it with hard PVC and--if you truly can't get to the end that's on the deck pumpout fitting, wrap the remaining hose in a doulble layer of Saran Wrap...which must be ONLY the Saran brand if you want it to work. Do a search for Saran Wrap for more details about wrapping sanitation hoses in it.

Peggy, I agree with you.

The 3' of hose I will be replacing is the 3' and more that would hold the stuff. I actually may be able to replace 5'. I'll get as far up as I can reach.

Interesting that Saran is the only brand of wrap that works.

Thanks
