Head holding on H27?

anyone know what size the holding tank is in a 1983 H27? In my searching of the archives I was not able to determine this.

This past weekend I was able to clean the v-berth area with a bleach solution. Tempoaraily reducing the smelly sock sensation, probably because my nose was filled with bleach fumes...lol.

Still the smell returned. I suspect that there may be some seepage around the holding tank lines. I am thinking that a new head (the current Jabsco has a fill problem) and lines are in the future. My thought is that since this boat is new to me I might as well change out the head system so that I know what I am dealing with. I just ordered Peggy's book so I am waiting before I make any changes in the design.

In regards to the head, how much larger is the Jabsco Twist and lock Standard over the Compact?

Measure your tank to determine capacity

If it's rectangular, it's easy: L x W x H in inches...divide by 231 (cu. in./gallon). Because you're using outside dimensions and also because you can't use every cubic inch in a tank without overflowing it, you'll get a weird number...back off at least a gallon to the closest round number...that's the useable capacity.

If it's non-rectangular, you'll need some math skills to arrive at the number o cubic inches.

Bleach will not eliminate any odor....And I doubt if there's any seepage around your sanitation hoses...more likely the hoses have become permeated with odor and are stinking. New hoses are the only cure.

The Jabsco Twist 'n' Lock is identical to the previous Jabsco manual toilet...the "locking" feature on the pump shaft is the only difference.

It's entirely possible that you need a new toilet, but I doubt if that will cure the "fill problem." If I'm correctly guessing what you mean by that, it's prob'ly happening because a) there's no vented loop in the intake and b) the toilet is being left in the wet mode.

I think you'll find it helpful to spend some time reading the discuessions in the Headmistress forum while you're waiting for my book to arrive. Then I'll be glad to help you with any changes/improvements needed in your system.

The holding is origional and is triangular. It resides under the V to the starboard.

The fill problem is that when the plunger is pulling water into the bowl, very little if any water actually makes it into the bowl. The head is being left in the dry mode. When I add water to the bowl with a jug that I keep nearby to help flush, the toilet has no problem clearing the bowl.

In regards to seepage the p.o. added tape at a fitting near the holding infill, there was a dark orange murky deposit at this juncture. I suspect the hoses need to be changed as well.

And make sure the vent lines are kept clear! There is no need for 'odor filters' on these-- a clear line admitting lots of fresh air will solve most of the odor problem.

Mine are 3/4" - I'm sure Peggie will say that's a little small but it's all that would fit. I have one each side for 'flow-through ventilation' when on anything but downwind. Also they are primarily PVC pipe to avoid sagging hoses which can trap water which can block air flow. The hull fittings are SS through-hulls, NOT fuel-tank vents. They are in the hull below the gunwale (black toerail track).
