I started this thread here because my question is specific to this boat. My head has a vented loop, but none of the H31's in on yachtworld have one. How necessary/beneficial is this component? I'm all about simplification; if the loop isn't beneficial I'll remove it.

Thanks.

If you do a search you will find a ton of info on vented loops with head installations. Query it with "vented loops" and type in "Peggy the head mistress" in the author field and it will take you right to a bunch of comments you will find useful.

Ok, I have Peggi's book because my boat stinks. I went back and read what she said about vented loops and now I'm really perplexed. She said the loop should go between the pump and the bowl. That makes sense because it would close with positive pressure and open on suction. The way my head is configured it shouldn't draw in water at all, but it does. That makes me think the loop has failed and isn't opening. In any case, it's obvious that I have work to do. Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

Our Hunter 31 never had a vented loop. We had it re-plumbed like the WM catalogue diagramed (preferred method). All waste was discharged into the holding tank and then it could be pump out either thru the deck fitting or pumped overboard.

Like Steve, I converted my H34's head (basically same as the H31's) to discharge only into the holding tank, eliminating the Y-valve and overboard discharge. The tank's pump-out hose runs straight from the deck to the tank. The only loop left is in the vent line.

The vented loop is to prevent the overboard discharge line from becoming a siphon and drawing water back into the head, possibly sinking the boat if that occurs. If you replumbed following the WM diagram, you should have nothing to worry about.

The vented loop in the O/B discharge line is a separate loop. The loop in the picture is in the intake line between the seacock and the pump. In any case, I know what I need to do. It needs to be reconfigured. Not a huge project.

That loop is normally way up on the inside of that compartment, just below the deck so that the vent on top will be above the water line when heeled over. Evidently the hoses connected to it were replaced with shorter ones for it to be visible where it is. I'd rehose it and secure it up high just below the deck.
