Head Bolt Backing

I’m replacing the jabsco manual toilet with a Raritan marine elegance on my hunter 38. I just completed removing the old head and noticed that the lags used to mount it came out with black on the threads for a good portion of the bolt. Is there plywood underneath the head platform fiberglass that these bolts go into? Im concerned if there is that it may be rotting and in need of replacement. I’d really love to avoid cutting the fiberglass head module if I don’t need to.

If the lag bolts long enough to extend beyond the flooring, it's possible that portion is black due to corrosion or just mold/mildew. Are the bolts entirely black or only the lower part of them?

Only the lower portion of them. I’ll be back at the boat this evening and can measure how much clean thread there was.

My boat is a 2006 hunter 38- would it be likely hunter used plywood blocking under the toilet or a solid fiberglass surface? I supposed I could also see if I can get a small pick into the bolt holes and see if the surrounding material is soft.

Looks like there was about 3/8” of clean thread before the black in the lags. I didn’t have anything on hand to look at the holes in too much detail but I did find a good access under the head module. I’ll be back there with a boroscope to take a better look this weekend and confirm what’s under the fiberglass.

There is plywood in at least the forward head on my H410. I replaced the lag screws with expansion anchors

On our Hunter 38 I have found only glassed in aluminium backing plates. I think the black coloration is an indication of SS in an aluminium plate. Screwing the fine thread of a bolt in wood seems like crimal irresponsability to me.
