Peggie - I have an '04 Hunter 33, with the standard Jabsco manual head. I too am having a back-up into the bowl, and can't pump bowl contents all the way through. BTW, fresh water flushing, no solids ever in this system, and we spare the squares - only the smallest piece of paper to do the job. As I've seen in many posts, I checked the vent line - it doesn't seem to be blocked, but...the boat has those stainless steel flush-mounted vents, rather than the clam-shell vents - I can't get inside it to check for blockage, but I don't know what could get inside that thing anyway. I got the vent hose off the inside of the hull vent fitting, but couldn't get it off the tank side for fear of breaking the plastic tank vent fitting. Nothing noted inside the hull side of the hose, except the lovely aroma. In Raysco's thread dated 6/29, you suggest replacing the joker valve. I may try this, rather than the whole rebuild kit. You also suggest replacing the Jabsco with a better manual head. What's out there that will fit what looks like 4 floor bolts and 4 total hoses of the Jabsco? Thanks, Gregg

What do you mean, you can't get inside it
Every vent thru-hull has holes or slits in it, or a screen that can be knocked out, that provides access to scrape out whatever may be in it. So there should be no need to remove the vent line from the thru-hull. What can get inside it? Dust, pollen, waste that spills out when you're heeled...spider webs....small insects... To remove the vent line from the tank fitting, warm the hose first. It'll come off with some effort, but not enough to worry about damage to the fitting. As for whether to replace only the joker valve after 3-4 years instead of rebuilding the toilet...that makes as much sense as only changing one quart of oil in your engine--IF it made any sense to put ANY money into a Jabsco toilet. However, I don't think replacing the joker valve or even rebuilding the toilet will solve your problem...'cuz you don't just have backflow, you also have backPRESSURE that's preventing the toilet from being flushed. Sea water mineral buildup in your head discharge line can reduce the diameter enough to cause it...one of your guests may have flushed something they shouldn't have...or, if you stop pumping as soon as the bowl is empty, leaving bowl contents sitting in the line because they stop moving when you stop pumping, YOU may have caused it. But the first thing I'd do is clean out the vent thru-hull and get the vent line off the tank so you can clean out that end of it. You might also want to check out the link below.

Backup Solved, I think.
Thanks for all the help. The solution to my problem was that the Tank Indicator showed it was half full. I did a visual inspection of the tank and it was full, right up to the intake line. I did a pump out and it has been fine, so far.
