Our 1983 H-34 has a serious oxidation problem on the deck, I'm afraid that I am scrubbing away my deck each time I wash the boat! Don't like the idea of wax because it dosen't stop the oxidation and the amount of labor involved. Has anyone used the VertGlas product and were you pleased, was it easier and does it last longer? I like what VertGlas claims but they suggest 4 coats! and the H-34 has a big deck! This could be expensive! If you have really used this, we would like to hear your advice. Charles: Have you thought about trying any of the Island Girl products. They actually fix the problem rather than covering it up. It is worth a try. Jim can answer any of your questions. You need some input from someone that has used the VertGlas on the deck (assume that you are speaking about NON-skid). Is it slippery when wet? Jim from Island Girl is actually working on a product for the non-skid. Good luck.

'Cuz sooner or later, it does have to come off and be re-applied. I've never met anyone who did re-apply any of this type product a second time.

Vertglas On my H34
There actually was a 1983 h34 in charter at my marina and they tried it first. I watched it for a year before I did mine (also a '83 h34) and am pleased. They boat finish looked great with minimial effort. The $59 kit did my entire vessel six coats. That was 2 1/2 years ago. Although it still looks better than it did prior to using it, it has started to "yellow". For a test I recently stripped the transom. They kit has remover but I also found out that West Marine "Black Streak Remover" disolves the stuff. Takes a little effort to remove but still easier than wax or compound and you get better results. I did my deck as well as the hull with NO REGRETS. My boat is up in New England on fresh water so your results may be different. I'll re-apply it again before I sell it for sure. Barry

IG doesn't get removed
You may be thinking of acrylics, which can sometimes yellow and have to be removed before a second application. IG is applied in stages - the first stage is a cleaner, I know that much. But I don't recall that the subsequent solutions are additives that sit on top of the gelcoat and look shiny. I'll have to read up on the stuff more and I'll get back to you on that.

Once the oxidation is removed, you can use the I.G. wax or any other wax product. I can not remember the names of their different products but I can tell you that they have worked for me. The process for the removal of the oxidation involves using their cleaner with a piece of synthetic 3M steel wool. You just use a few drops of the product on the area and rub with the wool. I wish I had the ambition to do my entire hull with this product. I have only done the topsides. Going to do it again this fall, if sailing does not get in the way.

traffic and expansion/contraction due to temperature changes take more of a toll on any coating than can be just touched up. Once it's worn completely off in places and/or starts to crack and peel, it all has to come off before it or anything else can be re-applied. I had such a nightmare experience removing New Glass that I'm afraid to try Vertglas or any other similar product. Sure looked great till then, though.

The Island Girl Sea Glo worked great on my 35 deck. I used a low speed buffer and it was able to get the nonskid white, it took me about 8 hours to do the whole deck and the transom. I have had people ask if the deck was painted this spring. I didn't seal the deck and it still looks great after6 months of normal cleaning. I am waiting on IG to come out with a deck sealing product (in developement). Bob

Bob: Check out the West Marine Non-skid cleaner. Now that you have the deck de-oxidized, this stuff is a good maintenance cleaner too. You mentioned that you used a buffer. Did you use a scotch bright pad on the buffer or a regular pad?

I have a friend who, get this, sprays his C-36 hull with a diluted (I'm not sure of the dilution ratio) solution of Armor All. He's been doing this for more than 10 years and his hull looks great. No buffing or elbow grease required -- he just wipes it down with a towel. We're always telling him that someday his hull is going to spontaneously decompose, but so far so good. He keeps it in a garden sprayer.
