I have always unstepped my own mast on my 1981 H33 for winter storage. Now I own a 1990 33.5, and the mast is taller and has 2 spreaders, etc. That 33.5 mast is preformed with the rake in it, right? Can anybody give me hints on doing this? Thanks. Ken Palmer, S/V Water Colors

Unstepping H-33.5 mast

Ken, We have a 1990 Hunter 33.5 and have unstepped the mast for 3 of the previous 4 winters (we left it up yast year and will this year). I had the yard unstep it with a crane just before they hauled it for dry storage. I wouldn't even think of trying to unstep it myself. It is much to big and heavy to do it without a crane. Regards, Dick Carey S/V Puffin 1990 H-33.5

Same advice

The mast is 48'-1/2"-- long don't try this yourself. Two years ago I had my boat stored mast down and a truck hit the mast and snapped it. Since then I store it stick up.

Unstep mine three time a year.

Just take it to a relaiable marina with a decent mast crane. Make sure its a calm day and watch your wind indicator etc. at the top of the mast. Don't let them use the spreaders to hold the sling, make them tie a line down to the gooseneck.

Thanks to all.

I have made the decision to store Water Colors with the mast up this year. Why go through all the aggravation of taking it down and putting it back up. We use a jin pole at the club and do our own masts. I have helped with single spreaders and double spreaders. Long and short masts, some heavier then others. After you do enough of these, it gets to be pretty routine. However, I have always had some difficulty with double spreaders. Getting the lift line to the balancing point between spreaders always takes some extra thought. This year I will have to figure out how to cover the boat having the mast up. I used to have it supported on the boat and it would act like a tenting pole. I know there are a zillion ways of covering, so will just pick the best one for me. Thanks again, Ken Palmer, S/V Water Colors 1990 33.5 Rochester, NY
