Sailboat Caught in Surf

From the site with the photos: Sailboat Capsizes under Golden Gate Bridge, Surfers come to the Rescue, I was at Fort Point today, finishing up an eleven part photo essay on the surfers of San Francisco, and then I saw this sailboat, I said to the crowd, "LOOK, this sailboat is going to surf the waves!" Then it capsized, See how the surfers came to the rescue, and Saved the two sailors.

for those not familiar with sf bay

for those not familiar with sf bay the current can be quite precarious under the golden gate, even more so between the bridge pier and the shore. additionally the wind between the pier and shore is very nasty, 15-20 knots in the afternoon, and it refelects off of the pier and can gust in completely different directions from minute to minute. news reports over the weekend indicated both sailors on board were rescued by the surfers in the area. Fred, is that broadband on your boat? now thats sailing! chris

Local knowledge

The South Tower Demon and the Ft Point surf line isn't somewhere you want to be. I am surprised that the boat stayed afloat as long as it did ... or keel boats don't make good surf boards. I have been out on days like the one shown many times and it's knarly, but doable if you don't do something stupid.

Santana 22

The boat was built by WD Schock in Southern California. It is a Santana 22 and they are very popular in the SF area. It is a very good boat. Rob

ouch

It's a Santana 22, all right. A terrific boat, and the first "big boat" for my wife and I. I don't think Gary Mull designed it with hanging 10 in mind. It churned my stomach to see "our" boat churning in the surf. But I like the way it popped back up. Twice.
