Have you replaced your winches?

Have you replaced your winches on your O'day 25 or 26 and if so what did you go with?
I asked how to size a winch to replace the Barient 10Ps on the Ask A Sailor forum but thought I would ask specifically what others have used on boats similar to mine or do is it better to stay with the 10Ps and put the money elsewhere?

I replaced the old Barlow primary winches with Lewmar 16 two speed. You can probably get by with the 8 single speed.

RBone, did you go with self tailing or standard winches?

Standard, but that was then. I don't know what I would do now. Cost would be a factor too. I get along just fine with what I've got though.

Seems to me, if you ascertain a need for new winches, and are ready to pony up boater bucks, you might as well go self-tailing. I mean, why not make it easy on yourself?

But, I don't know, I don't need winches for anything on my boat…

Self tailing winches are a beautiful thing, especially for the short-handed sailor. But they are SO much more expensive than the standards. You can usually get a serious discount at a boat show, but you will still be looking at serious money. IMHO, if you can at all afford them, they are worth the extra money. Not sure I would go with the two speeds; that's really a luxury.

Laying out a boat buck was tough but after reading a bunch of stuff on how most boats come with winches two sizes too small, proved out by the selection guides, I decided to make it easy on the Admiral and myself. I just ordered a pair of Andersen #12 ST Full Stainless winches. With some price matching I got them for only $5 more ea than the cheapest STs I could find and being all SS was a big factor.
Figured what the h, I can eat less for a few months.
