Have you experience with Charter Lakes Ins?

I have been with Boat U.S. for over 20 years claim free. I just received a quote from Charter Lakes Insurance for nearly 20% less than my current Boat U.S. premium. This is for coverage of a 2001 Cat 36 on Lake Michigan. Does anyone have any comment, good or bad about Charter Lakes? Their underwriter is Markel American Ins. Co. I would appreciate any information that this august group can provide even if it is only April.Thanks,Jack Gilmour

Insurance

Jack, I would do a little research on the company starting with A. M. Best to check their rating. I would also want to know who handles claims, i.e., company adjusters or independent adjusters. You might want to know how long they have been writing marine insurance. The insurance market has been pretty hard the past couple of years and there are signs of softening in some lines of coverage. The last thing you want is coverage with a company that jumps into the marine market with little or no experience even if the rates are 20% less than BoatUS.

Do they cover older boats

I haven't had much luck securing Insurance for a 78 C 26. one company so far any help would be appreciated. second season out and Allstate said it's to old to cover dropped Oct 31 03 just when I was done for the season anyway. So the search is on.

Charter Lakes Ins

I use Charter Lakes for my insurance coverage. I had shopped around quite a bit before choosing them. They offered me fast service, detailed coverage and reasonable rates. They seem to respond to inquiry fairly quickly, for an insurance company. However, they know they have us where they want us be it boat insurance or whatever so they seem to cop less of an attitude than most insurance underwriters.
