Next time you are watching TV and the commericals are running. Mostly medical pill selling type or others, if they are selling smoothing type meds or products. It is usually on a sailboat or have sailboats in the background. Are they finally getting what we have been enjoying most of our lives. Just have to enjoy the joy of sailing. ;D Jim S/V Java

Excellent Observation

Given what a low percentage of the general population actually sails, I have always found the widespread advertising use of sailing images fascinating. Obviously, the pictures are usually beautiful. Notice how many mutual fund companies, insurance companies, etc., use the image as well. I've always wondered wether people respond that well or if the execs signing off on the advertising are more likely to be sailors.

False advertising?

It's tough reading on this site about all the sailboat shows around the country. The Oklahoma City Boat Show runs the next two weekends and there won't be a sailboat within miles. But look at the picture they put on their boat show Web site. Mac SV Boodle

Dallas Boat Show

I believe that pic would tick me off as well. In this area, we have the Summer and Winter Ft Worth boat shows, and teh Summer and Winter Dallas boat shows. We've hit all 4 at one time or another, only to find that the only one of the four that show sailboats is the Winter Dallas Boat Show. They always have a few sailboats to drool over. Not many, but enough to make it worth the ticket price. By the way, it starts this weekend (the 28th), through the next.

The Seattle "Show" was about 98% Power

The Seattle Boat Show (indoor part) was about 98% power. For fear of overloading Phil's storage there is a link to the picture I took at the Seattle indoor show: http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums/fpix.tpl?xfno=122&uid=F&rid=2005022003051.78 I went because I wanted to talk to some manufacturers of particular products but there weren't that many manufacturers reps there, either. Mostly just the retailers and they aren't near as good as answering questions at the tech reps.

Same here, went to the Long Beach show

(big) cause I wanted to see the new C310 and wasn't one there. Even the in-water was overwhelmingly powerboats, same with a local show in the water at my marina. The harbor is overwhelmingly small sail, but only a few at the show and one was a Cabo 56 they are asking $995,000 for. When they do show mid-size sail the boats seem very busy and I've witnessed numerous sales. I really intend to get to the all sail show this spring in San Francisco, hope springs eternal.

Toronto Boat Show ;)

After reading all these post about no sailboats, the Toronto show was great. They had well over 25 big boats everything from a c25 to the Hunter 41 and Tarten 3700, Bavarian, C&C 99, C35,&C36. Every small sailboat you could think of and at least 10 inflatable dealers. they put all the sailboats in the main arena but seperated them from the power boats by putting all the small fishing boats between them. It was nice to see all the venders, I still think we missed somethings. They had a lake with powerboats and a C25 in it amazing, since it was 12 outside and snowing like crazy. gotta love the winter

sailing is beautiful

It's true! Whenever marine activities are depicted (unless it's a Miami drug runner) the scene almost alway depicts a sailboat or two for that serene water experience. But when it comes to combined boat shows the power boats seem to be the most featured. In particular the PWC's have taken center stage! The Chicago Strictly Sail show is wonderful for an indoor show. The Detroit show, such as it is, is so focused on power boats one would never know there are sail boats. Sail on and live the dream. Mike S/B PitteraPat, Lake Huron ;d

Movie scenes

Mike's comment made me think of that serene (and slightly comical) sailing scene in the Jackal movie remake. The Jackal (Bruce Willis)smuggles a gatling gun into the country from Canada by popping off the end cap of his boom and slipping the gun into it (how's that for underutilized storage space). We then see him underway on his solo journey, where he is sitting back and enjoying the sail while effortlessly deploying his spinnaker at the touch of a button (never leaving the cockpit). Boy, sailing is real easy!

And have you ever noticed...

that they seldom make it realistic? E.G. slack on the jib sheets and no heeling, but they're moving at a good clip, and steering it like a go-cart.

Mutual Funds = Clear Sailing?

Just received a brochure from a rather large mutual fund company. The front cover has this photo of some sailor dude standing (just hanging around) on a spreader...while sailing. No harness... attached to nothing. I think he is my investment advisor...he's probably wondering if he should jump before he sends out this month statements to his clients.

Tell me why----

Carnival Cruises plays a sailing song in their commercial, and there is not a sail in sight? I guess if the craft has a freeboard of 20' or larger, it qualifies as sailing, not motoring.

Saw one last night...

A young woman was solo sailing through rocks and fog about 20' off shore. When they show a close-up of her, she looks more like she is looking for a parking spot at the grocery store. I think it was for an investment company. Could it be that they think sailboat owners have money to invest? After all, if we can afford a sailboat, we must be loaded.
