For me, working on the boat can be almost as gratifying.
I'm willing to take nearly anyone out ANYTIME. Sadly, I have not been able to work on my boat or sail since June 24th due to rotator cuff and bicep tendon re-attachment surgery. I still have a couple months before I could even consider short-handing my boat on a nice Sunday evening. I can't even do a 12 ounce curl with my right arm!

I'm going through withdrawals (from my boat time)!

You certainly have my sympathies. I've got to believe you went through the surgery with the view that it will eventually make you better.

I have no use of my Right Shoulder and can if I try hard lift the coffee pot. Most of the time I don't even try. I sail all the time but could never do it just by myself unless I went with electric everything and Furling Sails that I could do one handed take some one out with you let them do every thing you would do single handed Bam your out sailing. SOmetimes my hardest part is finding some who is not busy all my friends still have to work. Told them one Day tease me now but one Day. I hope Very Much you are able to go Because believe me I know how much it hurts. And is hard to get moving agian with this type of injury. GO SAILING get some to be your winch. Sail On wish you fast healing

You are correct. The goal was to attempt to eliminate as much chronic pain as possible at once. The doctor told me my situation had deteriorated to an extent it would not heel on its own and would result in complete shoulder replacement if I waited.

I'm thinking 12 ounce curls could be used as physical therapy that builds up to handling a tiller and winch :).

Too HOT and stormy here lately to sail.. but I was rummaging through stuff this morning and found this picture of a good sail day in a friend's old Scorpion (a lot like a Sunfish, only a little bigger) I was still in college after Navy daze.. picture was taken about 1973..

I have a standing Wednesday night sail after work...started when I first bought a boat and my wife suggested I sail with a group of guys at the marina. Now she figures I know as much as them, and no longer need the "training". I don't have the heart to tell her I typically sail solo and race the other guys

Also try to get out at least once each weekend, at least for a few hours.

We've been out cruising PNW waters for seven weeks. Admiral says time to go home. There's always the wed night races

Been there, done that. Mine was done in late Summer 2009. Pay attention to your doctor and follow through with the physical therapy. It takes some work to get back to normal.

Treworgy 65' LOA Custom Steel Pilothouse Staysail Ketch St. Croix, Virgin Islands
We took another couple of beginner sailers with us last week and sailed overnight from St. Croix to St. John, then on to the British Virgin Islands. The passage to St. John was an inspiring overnight sail with a full moon and mostly clear skies. The couple proved to be quick learners and pitched in on all the deck work and sail handling. We had a delightful time and visited 4 islands in total over 6 days. On the way back they were already talking about and planning the next trip.

The wife and I spent the last 2 days on the boat, and my dad, who recently turned 95, has been wanting to come aboard for a wile so we met up with him at the dock yesterday for his first 2 hour "sail". unfortunately there was very little wind wile he was there, and we were only able to raise the sails for about 20 minutes wile in a Venturi area that did push us along long enough for him to at least feel sailing under wind power alone. he'll have something to tell his buds at the barber shop now anyway. He "went sailing" ;) .

Sailed out into Lake Erie last weekend to escape the heat. Anchored out under a clear star filled sky. This weekend my son & grandson went out sailing with me to the islands. Great sailing till the thunder storms came around. Dropped sails and motored on, in the rain. Rest of the day turned out nice. Stayed the night at Middle Bass Island State Park Marina. The three of us had good fun.

Catalina 22 Trailer
The end of June we went camping with my older brother and his family on the lake down here in Mississippi. This was just a few days after I picked up my 76 Catalina 22 and we rigged and splashed it for the first time while camping there. My brother, who lives about 700 miles from me, immediately fell in love with sailing and my C-22. He started searching as soon as he got home and finally snagged a fixer upper 75 C-22 this week. So I guess we can chalk another one up for the team. Sailing is addictive.

I also took one of my friends out on the boat for his first time this past Saturday and he loved it. Even though we had a little incident with a thunderstorm blowing through with him brand new and me still green...

Russ, Good to see you are being a good son.
Time is short. I miss the experiences with my Dad. The last few years we took the opportunity to be together were the best of times.

Going to take two trips this month. One out to the Strait of Juan D'Fuca. Just to see how this boat functions in an Ocean Swell. Prep for a run down the coast later. Second will be taking my wife out for our first cruise circumnavigating Whidbey Island. That one needs to be a good adventure.
